Beat ya Quinny,NOS genuine Ford/Motorcraft rear v/discs £50 and NOS Ford/Motorcraft pads 12.99 
Ebay of course if you keep looking it does come up,this was mid last year when i uprated my rears to vented always a bonus when you have funds in the Paypal account from some other old crap you sold on there 
its like free money done this way

i then fitted the new Gen Ford Sierra handbrake cable that i had in stock for 13 years

some call it being tight i prefer to call it bargain 
Interesting topic for me at the moment... I've been offered a complete set of pretty much new (c. 1,000 miles) Griff 500 calipers, discs, pads, braided hoses, etc. for about £350.
1. Is this a sensible 'upgrade' for a precat?
2. If I go for it do I need to look at the rears as well?

Brand new EBC grooved and dimpled brakes for a 500 are £100
500 calipers can be picked up from the boys who want bigger and better, or cossie calipers can be picked up too.
Your second user price is miles off LG as Quinny says.
Don't bother with the rears, the balance in these should be slightly nose-biased if you ask me, there is far too much potentially going on at the back as it is.
Braided hoses and DOT5.1 fluid is a must while you have it all apart though.

Thats interesting Quinny, the transformation of my car when I changed the front end from standard pre-cat setup to 500 calipers, EBC GD150 rotors, Red Stuff pads and braided hoses all round and DOT5.1 fluid was staggering.
My pre-cat brakes were frankly terrifying when some urgency was called for and the turning point came on when I crested a hill doing around 70 on a dual carriageway to find a queue of traffic around 100yds away and my first reaction was to look for an out because I didn't think the brakes would stop me.
It could have been the old stuff were rubbish, but I'd had the rotors skimmed and cleaned/greased/bled everything.
