heater control valve?

my heater is not working. The fan works the up/down motors work. the additional 3 speed fan under the dash works but the water pipes to the heater box remain stubbornly cold.

I assume it is a heater control valve. Is this in the passenger footwell next to the abttery?

where do i get one at sensible money/alternative part number?

Clever Trevor stock them as do the other usual sources. Depends if it's the valve or the stepper motor.

Gsf do them for about a tenner, modified golf part. Search on here and you should find the details.

Try playing with it before you go buying any bits.

Basically, it works by a bar being attached at 90deg to the motor spindle and kept in place/alignment by a screw. As the motor turns it moves the bar up / down to open the valve. It is stopped from over-rotating in either direction by a couple of micro switches.

So you can see with the screw and micro-switches there is plenty of room for things to get out of alignment.

Its unlikely to be the valve to be honest, the seal is the usual thing that goes on these and that means you can't turn off the heat.

The stepper motor mentioned above is nothing to do with the heating system BTW, it controls the engine revs to stop the engine stalling as you dump the clutch.

That stepper motor does, but what is the name of the type of motor that is capable of discrete analogue movements and is 'attached' in the loosest possible sense to the HCV?

Quite, I was referring to the motor that moves the valve arm, not the idle control valve located at the rear of the plenum. I thought the heater valve was moved by a "stepper type" motor but regardless of the electrical definition, it is that which has failed on my own Griff. I can control the heat output by moving the valve arm manually, most of the suppliers stock the plastic valve with arm but not the control motor. I thought Jes might have a similar problem. I have power at the motor when I press the switch but not activity from the motor. Sometime I'll get round to taking the motor out to see what is wrong.

Thanks - undid the grub screw on the motor spindle and had to force the valve arm to get it to open - it was seized solid. A few time opening/closing it and the valve has freed off and works fine. the motor however seems dead - that will be the next bit - at least i have heat now though!
