Valley Gasket End Seals

My valley gasket has been leaking oil at both ends. Having got the old one off I can see that the end seals at both ends are split. This I guess explains the leak but why have they split. Were the end clamps over tightened or is that just what happens to them ?

What is the secret to fitting these so they stay oil tight ?

Heat +/ overtightening?

Folks normally have problems getting the sealant right (correct) at the ends in the little gap to the heads. If that sealant is messed up no amount of nipping up will fix it.

There may be some cheap rubber alternatives that are OK in Landies, but not quite up to the extra heat in TVR engines (& engine bay). It's areas like this that I'd always buy good stuff that I know people have used on these cars regularly.

I got mine from V8D they do one thats had the port holes enlarged to match the porting on the Griff inlet manifold . If you just get a normal Landrover one then you will have to get your dremel out to adjust it to the correct size.

Just out of interest what are the dimensions of the ports on a “ported” and standard head ? The gasket I have has holes of 44mm by 26mm, the manifold is 44 by 27 and the head is 26.5 by 47 which seems an unfortunate step in size and can’t be helping the gas flow

They vary quite a lot IME..
