Sticky idle?

Went on a great drive over the weekend to the New Forest and back mostly on the A272, first time this year with the roof off, felt great. But, whilst trundling around in slow traffic in the New Forest I noticed my idle speed wasn't dropping back to normal quickly enough. It wasn't doing it consistently but enough to be obvious.
When dipping the clutch it seemed to drop to about 1500, then gradually over the next 5-10 seconds drop down to just under 1000. It felt quite noticeable as I wasn't getting the usual strength of engine braking, I had to use braking where usually just releasing the throttle would suffice to slow me down a little.
It wasn't doing it all the time so I assume something maybe a little sticky or dirty etc, any ideas?
Will probably go out for a short run tonight and see if it does it again.

give the stepper motor a clean , also wouldn`t hurt to spray some carb cleaner around the butterfly area just to make sure nothing is sticking, but most tickover problems are down to the dreaded stepper I`m afraid.

Could someone elaborate on "the dreaded stepper motor" problem. Sounds like I might have one. Bet it is expensive.

Ta Clive, I read the Fuel Injection section of the bible on the train this morning and I am now much more knowledgeable on the EFI than I was yesterday!
I only got my copy of the bible last week, so I have a good excuse for not having digested it yet

I will try cleaning the stepper and the throttle butterfly at the weekend see if cures the problem.

Sonic, If you haven't got Steve Heaths bible yet, go and buy a copy from the TVR car club and read the EFI section.

Sonic, nothing extremely expensive : only a plug to undo (free), the stepper motor to unscrew (free once you have found that 32 mm wrench) then clean the moving part with a little petrol (that part will cost you a few pence )
