checking preload - dry lifters???

I'm about to embark on the job of checking preload. I've got instructions from RPi's website and it seems quite straight forward but I seem to remember somebody saying that it should be checked with dry lifters. Is this correct?

Presumably you take them out afterwards and fill them with oil? Or do you just coat them in camlube instead? or both?
