I have a 2001 Griff 500 and have noticed a ticking noise coming from the top left hand side of the engine. It gets quicker with revs and is present at tickover. Should I stop driving it until I can get it to the dealers or is this common ?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Could be just a leaking manifold.

No, it'd just leak exhaust gases. If you place a tissue/piece of paper next to the gaskets you should be able to see it moving. Your best bet is to get it down to your local dealer.

I think I have a similar ticking..... rises with revs, and is more noticable when engine is under load. thought it might be a tappet but it's just as noticable when the engine is hot and has been driven quite a few miles (like 40-50), so less likely to be that?

Does that still sound like a manifold gasket? or something more sinister?

If it's a gasket, will I do any damage by driving it like it until its next service (3500-4000 miles away)? It's driven every day if that makes any difference.

If it's a really big tickin' then it's probably a turkey!

if it gets louder undeload its probably the manifoldgasket or manifold.

if not...cam
tappet
rocker
rocker pad

if it stated suddenly its probbly the gasket or rocker pad.
not the end of the world and not too expensive.

Turkey...LOL

Mine made a similar noise prior to getting a replacement camshaft

As has been mentioned, could be one of several things - camshaft I guess is worst case scenario (around £800).

Julian - how fast did your camshaft wear and begin to make a noticible noise?

Strangely my Griff has started to make such a ticking noise too. In the space of 1000 miles it has gone from a faint cam rattle (thats what we thought it was) to a full on heavy duty ticking under load that almost vanishes at low revs.

I only really noticed it last night (at the end of a 500 mile run) and my instant reaction was that I had cracked the exhaust but whenever I slowed down to really listen the noise just faded to the point where you couldn't hear it.

Cam's can go at as little as 25,000 miles. You sometimes only get 500 miles between quiet and noticable ticking noise.

Ian, did you ever get you're noise sorted? [rattle on overrun] Budgetgriff has same.

I guess it was around 800 - 1000 miles between noticing the ticking and getting it replaced at the major service (48k miles). I still have the old camshaft as an ornament - two of the lobes are circular, so I was running a V6 for a while!

Mine is booked in to check the gaskets on the 4th (which I already conveniently had booked off as holiday). Will find out soon enough what the problem really is!

Driving it today you couldn't hear the ticking - all very confusing!

Mine rattles like crazy on the overrun after 42,000 miles, but only at about 2200 rpm. It's still producing the power and torque expected on the rolling road though, so it's almost certainly not a worn cam despite my worst fears.

Maybe you just have a tappety sounding engine?

A sticking tappet is what I had originally had it down as when i noticed the noise earlier last week but I don't think so anymore - it sounded more like a tractor then a tvr on the motorway last night (only when throttle was opened up)

Car only had 36k on it when I bought it with all the usual service intervals covered by a main dealer. Sat for 6 months? that is more likely - I first test drove the car back in late November and actually took delivery of it a little over a week ago! The engine was turned and the car moved every day in the intervening time but no real mileage being applied...

turning it over may not be enough (tho could be )

tappets will pump up very quickly if they haven't completely drained. via a LONG layoff.

variations mean that something is changing. the only changing factors are the oil itself - gets thinner when hot so will get tappier if you have a problem, or the tappets which fill with oil (or not). there clearance of the tappet will change as the oil warms possibly showing wear.

engines shouldn't be tappy at all!

may need preloads reset, most common cause of tapping on over-run.

good luck

try V8 developments/ or V8 racing on here.
seems to know what he's talking about!!!

I managed to take mine to the dealer yesterday. They said that 'they all make that noise to a certain degree' and that it wasnt doing any damage. The only way to stop the ticking sound was to replace all of the Rockers, push rods and tappets (which would not be covered by the warranty).
I find the comment that 'they all make this noise' hard to believe as it did not make it when I bought it.
Should they find the offending parts and replace them or is their stance OK.

Sorry to bring the subject of oil up again...sometimes a slightly thicker oil reduces engine noise significantly. I am currently using Shell Helix and the engine is very quiet...

BTW the slightly thicker French Mobil 1 (similar spec to Helix) suits my Griff better than the 0-40 UK stuff.

Had a good listen to it yesterday and it while it is still "ticking" loudly at times (still sounds like a blown gasket to me) it is also providing lots of tappet noise action on overrun (even from just blipping the throttle) which disappears after a couple of seconds of idle as the oil pressure settles.
