I've just spent an afternoon 'preping' my 97 500 for it's MOT and everything is in perfect order except the Horn. I usually avoid using it as it is louder to give the engine a blip rather than use the mincy thing....

The relay is operating so I assume the fuse is OK just no noise. Having checked the bit in Steve Heath's bible about the horn location - front off side wing i took out the washer bottle and the cover plate behind and hey presto all i found is a large cylinder with both power and what appear to be water pipes - about 1/2 inch Dia. I didn't think i was totaly stupid when it came to the car but i have no idea what this thing is as i can't find reference to it in the book.

What is the cylinder and is the horn accessable if i move it out the way?

Any help would be great thanks.

The horns are most easily acccessible from the fron tof the car from underneath. They are not mounted inside the pods (or at least are not on my car) They are essentially behind the number plate, 2 of them, either side of the plate mounted to the inner wing/inside of the nose ahead of the radiator.

The cylinder you've located in the pod is the carbon cannister. This is how later cars vent their petrol tanks as it's not supposed to go to atmosphere. At the fuel filler neck you'll find a smaller diameter pipe which runs the length of the car through the hatch and into the cannister, there are then 2 more pipes. One leads to the plenum where the tank is vented too and the other is a breather for it to extract fresh air into the cannister to the tank - noticed that popping from your tank when it's going down, that is fed from here.

The ECU decides which it uses when. Often they have been junked and are not there. Make sure the atmosphere pipe goes back where you found it as if you've not had issues you can create them by allowing the atmosphere pipe to be in an area where it will suck up water.

Make sure when you put the hatch back you use a liberal amount of sealant as this will stop the water ingress into the pod.

Excuse the crap picture. You'll also note that my cannister is different to yours, this a Ford unit. Also ignore the HID ballasts and brighter lights wiring, I was only mock up a new hatch and sorting the wiring out whilst I am stripping the car ready for rebuild it is much easier to make sure everything is absolutely spot on with the light pods out yes

Gives you an idea though of how the circular unit you have is mounted. They're generally on the jubilee clip with a brazed bolt on it that goes through the hatch to stop them moving around. After I changed mine, the rectangular one has been in there looser than I wanted so I have made a new hatch etc etc . .

My cars unusual in that they also mounted the alarm siren inside the n/s front pod (according to Carl Baker who reckons he's never heard of one in there), which is great as the loom was built for it to be there and anything out of the engine except the engine is good AFAIAC, however, when it goes pop, it's a reeet bugger to sort out !

Thanks for the tips and if Johno, i knew about the carbon cylinder but has no idea it was that big or located there!

Glad my alarm siren isn't located in there as it would have been a right pain when my last one packed up at 4am and wouldn't switch off, the old bucket of water came in handy.

I will get the car on the ramp when the rain stops and see if I can sort the issue.

Thanks again.
