Rover V8 most technically advanced standard bore 3.5 ltr engine ever. This engine was campaigned by Tim Garlick in a 1972 Mk3 Cortina weighing in at 2,700lbs and achieved a best time/speed of 7.70 @167 mph at Santa Pod raceway. The engine was developed by ICE automotive and on its removal from Tim Garlick's car was fully freshened with new rods and with further upgrades to the oil and cooling system. Its hard to place a value on the engine development but would be in the region of £45,000 to £50,000 ++ In excess 200 mph in a TVR 1200kg

I saw this...fantastic, and with that pedigree I believe all claims!

How much power can it make?
How much money have you got?

Still true.

Standard bore 3.5ltr with full prep by ICE. Steel forged crank fully balanced. The block has been converted to 4 bolt mains with re-manufactured billet main caps and strengthening girdles. The Achilles heel of the engine (oil system, chain drive and water drive) has been remanufactured including an external scavenge oil pump, new billet front cover, external water pump and crankcase evacuation pump. Crane solid lifter camshaft with Crane lifters, Crane custom push rods supporting Yella Terra roller rockers opening stainless intake/exhaust custom valves with crane valve springs. The greatest amount of development work has been carried out in the head and intake set up with the fabrication of the sheet metal intake and split Holley 1050cfm dominator being matched and built around the most superior ported head castings with built in steam lines and additional oiling and head studs. The intake runners are matched to the intake ports for maximum flow. MSD external distributor drive and MSD crank trigger. Forged ROSS pistons with 4130 pins. Childs and Albert con rods.
Add 6 psi Nos 745 BHP

It always makes me wonder how economically such engines could be produced for if it was to be mass produced. The first standard 5.0l RV8 must have cost say £100k to develop but after throwing out a few thousand units they come down to under £5k each.
Using this logic and with this technology available over 40 years ago, why wasn't TVR 'mass producing' this engine?
Any how a very impresive piece of kit. All we need now is one of you brave hearts to throw it in to that Tiv your currently rebuilding and show us the printouts bounce

I don't think you can mass produce engines like that. Casting technology etc etc isn't (yet) good enough to be able to churn out engines time and again that have all the ports nicely matched, internals balanced, engines mapped properly etc etc. It's that stuff that introduces the epic cost.

In terms of a "because you can" exercise it's admirable. I think I'd personally consider something like an RST V8 in supercharged form.

That said, all the "hidden" costs would probably take that to similar sums too.

Ho hum. I must be getting old - I find the Griff lively enough with 340 (genuine) bhp.

I've seen this engine on a number of forums now. Why's that, is it for sale? Also for a lot less money it could have been force fed. Maybe the class rules wouldn't allow that option.
