Oil Temperature

As part of my rebuild, I'm fitting an oil temperature gauge (another one to watch !). The question is, what is an acceptable temperature window?

I'm more interesting in knowing that the oil is warm enough but it would also be good to know when it is getting too hot.

No idea. But FWIW I'd make a mental note of what it reads once it's up to temperature and only be concerned once it gets higher than that. Only useful of course if you know it's okay at the moment.
So not much help there then - again.

Not Tiv related but on my scoob i was reliably informed 75-80 degrees was the acceptable point before really working the engine,as to top temps then anything over 100 was starting to get a tad warm,never got that warm though so far as its not a track car,not sure if this is typical of all engines though,as it may differ for a v8 over a blown flat 4...... as with most tiv gauges id use it as an indication rather than an absolute, anything out of the ordinary then take notice.

Another point though,if you have not had an oil temp gauge before,it will be suprising how long it gets up to temp compared to the water temp reading,can take a fair few miles to reach the desired temp.

Yeh, that's the bit I'm most interested in. It'll be very interesting (especially in the winter) to see how long it takes to warm up properly.

I have a 5.3V8D engine and during normal driving the oil temps are anywhere between 80 and 90 degrees. During spirited driving, temps can go up to 110 and beyond, I usually back off at about 115 to let things cool down.(all the time the water temp stays at about 85 degrees)
I have been told that the oil I use is good up to 130 degrees, not that I would want to go there!
Getting up to temperature doesn't take long at all in either weather, about a mile and a half.
I do have an oil cooler fitted so that might make a difference in the temps if you don't have one.

Being housed in a plastic bodied car with all the heat retention that has over a metal bodied car may heve something to do with that,i only have experience on a "normal" car and it can take up to 8 miles or so depending on the outside temp..... a way longer than the water temp,interesting its so different .

Much depends where you take the temperature. The sump is like a big woolly measurement IME & means FA

I'm going to use the spare bung above the oil filter (I think it was meant for an oil cooler).

Very true,try to measure at the hotest point and consistant too,no idea where that would be on the rv8 though.
