Car has passed MOT with flying colours and I have now put some miles on it. Cam does all that I had hoped it would - no shunting issues at all (as a test at approx 1000revs in 5th it just does it on overun, but this may be the ECU anyhow) and it pulls very strongly right through.
Compared to my previous worn cam it is a transformation and it revs like I never expected a 5.0 could !
Car now performs as I had hoped, and it sounds different too - very hard edge through the cherry bombs.
Not sure if anyone else has an 885 fitted to concur with this???

Glad to hear it -especially as I've got mine in to be fitted with the same cam (as part of a Taraka upgrade) at the end of the month.

Enjoy!

Ian did you say you having the Taraka upgrade done at TVR Power at the end of the month?

Yes I did. It's going in on the 26th of this month for the Taraka, new Nitrons, brakes and hoses and a few other bits.

Why do you ask?

I would just be very interested to hear your opinion on the Taraka upgrade once you get it back.

I have searched the PH forums for information about the upgrade but there does not seem to be much information. Many people have posted about the 885 cam but not the complete package.

I quite like the idea of an upgraded engine rebuild by the same company who made the engines for TVR the first place along with the 3 year warranty.

That's exactly the reason I went for it too. I think it's in keeping with the original marque. I don't really need more power/torque, but I like the idea of the engine being fresh again (although there isn't too much wrong with it now) and being able to drive it hard without worrying about it coming to pieces.

I looked around at upgrades for around the same price at the other usual places. One place told me to go with the Taraka, as they couldn't match it for value for money!!

I'll certainly post my thoughts on how it feels afterwards - as a complete package.

At the moment my engine has been dyno'd at 282BHP and 285ftlb torque. I'd like to think both those numbers are well north of 300 when the work is done. Somewhere near TVR's 'claimed' figures would be good.

Don't get to collect the car until late May, so standby.....

If you could let me know you thoughts on the rebuild that would be great.

In reality I am not looking to rebuild mine for a while yet, I need to dyno mine to give me an idea of the cam wear etc.

There is no chance of me being able to build my own engine so I was looking at complete packages. I had singled out the TVR Taraka Plus and the Austec 5.2, neither of which there is much information on. I was swayign more towards the Taraka purely due to the fact that I am more than pleased with the current engine which still seems strong and was of course supplied by TVR Power.

Good luck with the rebuild and I hope you are pleased with the result in May. I rekon it will feel like a completely different car with the Taraka upgrade, upgraded brakes and shocks!

Red Baron I would be really interested to hear how you get on with the upgrade too, did Power give you any indication of the likely power and torque figures that the rebuild will produce?

Just to give an update - though at risk of hijacking the original thread....

Picked up the car post-Taraka (no. 39) only last Friday. Just to list the work done:

Taraka upgrade
New Nitron shocks and springs and set-up.
New front discs, new pads all round, new braided brake hoses.
Pre-cats removed and manifolds and Y piece ceramic coated in 'silver'.
New ali radiator, SS pipes and silicone hoses.
Better main beam lens.

Obviously the Taraka requires some running in - 1000 miles. I've done 250 so far.
It had 280 BHP (dyno'd) before and probably still has about the same until the larger plenum goes on after the run-in. Then it should come to about 315, although I'd like to think it might be a bit more. Not sure of torque figures, but I guess that depends on the chip map. It seems a rule of thumb is about £100 per HP increase, so the Taraka is about on par pound per HP.

I had the use of a Chimp 400 for a few days before, as I needed a car and mine wasn't ready, as the exhaust coating process took longer than expected. Initially, I thought the 400 felt quite responsive and although not nearly as raw and fast as the 500, still reasonably quick. Then when I got the 500 Taraka back, even though I had to keep it under 3500 rpm it already felt far more responsive and torquey than the 400. There was no comparison.

In the 250 miles I've done so far I've had no issues with the engine - it sounds better than ever, as a result of the pre-cats being removed and the coating, but there are some niggles with the brakes I think. There are some definite rattles coming from some of the corners, but I haven't had the opportunity to check it out, or get in touch with TVR Power for advice.

The car is not going to get driven for a while, as I'm in the process of selling a house overseas and am not in the UK for at least a month or so.

Will post another update after the run in process is complete.

Taraka plus upgrade, I have read what is included but not sure if it's a full engine rebuild plus upgrades or just the upgrades?

From what I understand in order to put in the upgraded components the engine is pretty much taken to pieces. Any areas that aren't due to be replaced as part of the upgrade might as well be replaced at the same time. Although, I haven't had a really close look at my final 'extras' bill to see if there were any additional engine components. I know there were a few additional suspension components and a new radiator etc, so my extras bill was as big as the cost of the Taraka - eek!!

I am glad you are pleased with it so far. I would love to know what you think of it once it is run in and the upgraded plenum is installed. It would be great to see some pictures as well when you get a chance.

Good luck selling the house and I shall look forward to hearing more of your thoughts on the upgrade.
