Fitting exhaust - help please

Guys
I have just refitted the exhaust after removal and It seems to be blowing all over the shop so its off and start again time. Can anyone advise the best sealants for:
Manifold gaskets
Manifold to Y piece
Y Piece to exhaust
I have tried using firegum but it seems to go off before I can assemble. I have also tried copper grease which is reccomended for exhaust assembly but it seems to be melting and running very quickly!! I have lined up the y piece/manifold and tightened with ratchet straps which lines everything up.
Off to the garage again to remove it - any tips would be appreciated.

I always found the best gaskets to be the metal sandwiched type from clevor trevor, as for assembling the y piece and exhaust system use exhaust assembly paste, firegum is far to thick, get it from halfords, it comes in a placi tube like a toothpaste and doesn`t taste minty at all

I used this stuff for the Y piece to manifold joints 12 months or so ago, did a splendid job.


Apply a thin (1mm) bead, tighten up then leave overnight before running.
Just google permatex copper max for suppliers.
Manifold gaskets should not need anything, neither should the Y piece to exhaust joint.
Copper grease is good to put on nuts & bolts to stop the threads from siezing up, but will be useless for sealing, as you have found it will just melt off.

Y piece to main exhaust I use std grease, it's an old trick but as it burns off it leave a nice carbon residue/seal.

Otherwise my vote goes with Clive.

+1.. great stuff!! on the manifould gaskets... I've had the metal sandwich ones blow the middle piece out before... so I go for wire mesh in gasket material types... Think I got my last ones from Raceing Green but they are old stock so specify the ones you want... You can also open them up to the manifould hole size a bit easier (something I had to do on my 500!!)

For the Manifold I used the metal sandwich type with a bit of blue hylomer to hold them in place. The Y piece just clean and dry, do make sure they are clean and fit together correctly, never had a problem.

I used the metal sandwich type and one blew one after about 250 miles - bloody poor. It was my own choice; I trawled around on here and took advice. Maybe I bought them on the cheap, can’t remember – poor choice anyway.

These are on Fle-Bay.. under 'TVR Exhaust'... It's what I use... no problems at all, Wire mesh re-inforced...
