Please reassure me

I've just completed my engine build

It started first turn of the key. All the dash lights go off.....but the oil pressure guage does not move. I've checked the connector and I've also fitted a variable resistor to the cable to check that the wiring and guage are ok.

However, when we took the engine out, the pressure sensor was dented so I'm guessing it's dead.

EVERYTHING IS ON HOLD. I'm not going to start it again until I've got a new sensor.

So, my reasurance - I'm going to be worrying about it now until the new sensor arrives and I can have another go but I think it is safe for me to assume that as the dash pressure light goes out, there must be oil pressure - Correct ?

Anyway - roll on Tuesday so I can get the engine going again.

If the light goes out then yes there must be pressure.

Have you grounded the pressure sender wire to prove the wiring and gauge are ok?

Another way to check pressure is to lift the rockercovers off and then start it, you should see oil!

Yes, I attached a variable resistor to it and earth. As the resistor turned, the guage went up and down so that looks to be fine.

bit late... but be warned they are probably the most delicate & expensive of the engine sensors (and gauge specific). I always remove them and put them somewhere safe before clanking around in that area

ummmm yes, it is a bit late I'm can't believe I've got to wait now until Tuesday to get it going, but I'm not going to risk it, just in case the guage is telling the truth ....So I've washed in instead.

All sounds OK . In america they call the oil light IDIOT switches.. `But the are very reliable & most cars work off about 7Lb pressure.. If the new switch is really expensive i would put a pipe fed system in so as youve got a more reliable reading''

Did you change the cam/followers. If so, then you may have heard the engine be REALLY noisey at start-up, then quieten as the lifters primed. This would mean you have oil pressure and pointing to a fault gauge.. rather than an pressure problem.

No, its a serp engine so not necessary....in fact I was specifically told not to.
