Lightweight rad

I have had a very slow water leak all last summer and finally got reound to fixing it. I decided to go for an ally radiator, so replaced the one that was there since I bought it. Steve Heath says it is a two man job to lift, so I was expecting a big weight saving.

But the one I took out is about the same weight as the new ally one I put in. Blast it. If anyone wants a used rad (you can easily lift it in one hand), it is yours for the cost of carriage (or collect, or at Cadwell on 1 Jun). Came off a Griff 500. The leak is a small split at the top of the unit, and it has been repaired before (and before my time). Otherwise, I will junk it.

They are quite light when all the water is drained out

The one I've got for the Chim has plastic ends from a Cerb, not much in the weight but better cooling (i hope)

AIUI they were fitted as std to the very late cars, and the cores are aluminium.

Original one that came out of mine was 3.5Kg heavier than the Aluminium one that went in so I guess it depends on what was fitted to start with. If you are looking for weight saving then bypass the heater circuit and get rid of the water in it, surprising how much that weighs.

I would be interested in your old radiator. Is it the same is what is fitted to the Chim? Where abouts in Beds are you located?

Sorry all - the rad got taken pretty quickly.

Weight saving was hopefully a bonus. Main point was to lose the irritating damp patch under the car.

And ... who has lifted one out when it is full of water?

I've handled rads when flushing & mentally noted how much the water affects the weight. As Steve pointed out its always something I think about when routing pipes. May sound silly but when folks have commented about weights of wiring....

..and don't be fooled by the capacity most are not filling or draining the complete system...
