How do I get to my 1992 4.3 speedo sensor?

Speedo and Mile-o-meter have stopped working, so want to check if the sensor has failed or the gap is too big.

I have searched for how to get access to the sensor, as mine is on the gear box, but cant find the answer.

Can you get to it from above, via the gear stick gaiter? Or do you have to get under the car?


Any advice gratefully received!

I have just swapped mine on my V8S - and it was a pig.
I don't have the exhaust on yet so you may have to remove it or drop it out the way.

It is held in by a small clamp which has a single small bolt holding it in place - very similar arrangement to the distributor clamp if you are familiar with that. The sender also has an O ring around the top - so even when the bolt and clamp are removed it takes a bit of effort to shift it - then it drops out

You can just see my old sensor here underneath the green reversing light switch wires - the speedo sensor should have a black cable coming out of it, but I ripped the wires out when I removed the gearbox



Sensor removed looks like this (this is my replacement - a Rover SD1 sensor off ebay) Later cars have the speedo sensor on the diff or somewhere?

Is it a pre-cat? There is a changeover with the cats to the sensor on the diff for the speedo and the box sender just to the ecu, can't recall when but I'd have a quick look at the back of the propshaft just to make sure

Yes my car is a pre-cat, so it looks like a proper car ramp and exhaust removal is required! - Beyond my capability, so I think a trip to my local dealer is required!

(I was hoping that you could somehow reach it from inside the car! - too much to ask of a TVR I suppose!)

Exhaust isn't in the way AFIK. Try Ant or Baretti IIRC they have experience of the sensor with precats.

Had to take my exhaust off to replace the sender a few years ago.
The annoying thing is after winter lay up the speedo isn't working again!!

I have used a meter on hz and the value goes up and down as I drive, does that prove anything though???

Can't you just go in from above (straight down the gear lever)? I may be hazy but I'm sure I had mine out or would it be when I had to fettle the h'brake/chassis mount so that gave extra clearance??
