Lets have another go, has anyone experienced noise from the hydraulic tappets. My Griff seems to get a slight rattle when running, following a 'enthusiastic' run the noise gets more pronounced-not unlike the other halfs Disco diesel. The car is still under warranty so would like to get some seasoned Griff owners opinions.

Stick a piece of wood between your ear and the rocker cover, and listen to identify the source. A smallish bore pipe in your ear and the other end around the fanimould flanges and collector will quickly tell you if its an exhaust leak (kind of hissing/whooshing sound).

How many miles on the motor/cam? What oil and what frequency of changes? The valve gear does get noisy when the lobes are vanishing (never seems right to me but it's definitely the case). With the covers off, it's possible to pop a dial gauge on the spring keepers, which will tell you if individual ones are obviously out of kilter with their peers on stroke. A very bright light might show enough to identify a very worn lobe (they are usually well gone by the time they get noisy). The lifters can get gunged up and stick but that would tend to be on old neglected motors running crap oil IMO

I'd be majorly peeved if I'd fubared a cam in 4k, but it's quite possible if you're unlucky...

Finding the tap on an RV8 can be a real pain in the arse. Firstly go to machinemart and buy one of these
http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/...
This will help determine if the noise is mechanical or simply a blowing/cracked manifold.

This unit will amplify any mechanical knocks /taps and make it easier to find the fault. If you can't localise the noise pull off the silver pipes and push the rubber tubes into a short peice of hose, you can then use this to find any manifold leaks by simply moving the end of the hose over the manifold. Its the same priciple as just sticking a hose to your ear but more precise and much easier.

Hope this helps
Chris
