Spark Plug Extenders

What do the plug extenders do? The ones that sit between the spark plug and the HT lead.

Are there different types/shapes?

It would solve a problem if I could leave them off.

Think they basically keep the temperature vunerable HT lead away from the hot manifold.

They could be left off for a while.
