There's also at least one pre cat 500. I guess that if the V5/car is genuine then it's a type approval dodge - TVR were quite creative...I think I would try and get the V5 corrected as mismatching info may cause you other issues, particularly if you wanted to sell.
It shouldn't affect your tax, all pre 2001 cars over 1.5ltrs are capped at £205/yr.

My OH had a 1993 Griff 500 and according to the TVR engine makers down in Brum nearly all of that era were listed as 4280 (4.3's) - I called and confirmed what the PO had got written down on a tatty fax - we insured the car as a 500 so no worries.
