Locking

For ages now locking my Griff has been a bit of a lottery. It tended to be very unlikely to lock at work but quite likely to lock when I got home. I've been pondering over the characteristics of this for ages; temperature, amount of traffic and loading on battery etc.

Anyway....

Recently it started to refuse to lock pretty much all the time.

I bravely experimented with the push button on the dash which locked the doors and brought up a yellow LED. To my surprise the car then locked via the remote for a few days. Now it's started not locking again.

Very odd....

So question 1 is: What the hell is going on? Clearly the solenoid works, so it seems like some part of the remote control...But why would locking it via the dash switch cure it for a while?

and question 2 relates to somethign I found whilst experimenting, that if I press the fob to lock I get two flashes of indicators. If I press and hold I get three flashes of indicators - what's actually supposed to be going on here?
