HID in my high beam

In the never ending world of TVR modification, todays little project was to install the HID set I just bought from China into my high beam lights.
Why?
Because my HID dipped beam light up the road signs and markers better than my high beam, so I needed to do something about it before I go swanning around Europe in 3 weeks.
I should have done it sooner. It was a doddle to do, and if I hadn't taken the time to photograph it all and sort out a bit of a wiring mess while I was at it I think the entire job would have taken an hour.

I have had HID lights on my griff for 5 yrs and never been stopped by the police, I also feel that these are a safety feature considering how rubish the standard griff lights are even with all the other available upgrades available (bulbs wiring etc). The only other worth while upgrade would be the 7" headlight upgrade.

Stop me if I'm being picky, but dibble has his work cut out knowing the C&U regs, never mind having a copy of a 20 year old type approval document. What's the likelihood, particularly if he's done the sensible thing and aligned them to avoid blinding oncoming traffic(unlike a sizeable minority of non-enthusiast motorists; don't see them getting pulled regularly)?Edited by David Beer on Sunday 20th June 21:00
I would be far more worried that if an accident occured then an insurance company could have a very valid reason to refuse a claim. As HID lights without the appropriate special reflector/housing are strictly not legal the insurance company would probably be on safe ground. As they are not legal even making them aware you have installed HID is not likely to receive much sympathy.

But I thought you couldn't use HID's in main beam because they take too long to warm up so couldn't be used to flash? I thought some cars overcame this with rally-style spotlights, but still...
This is something I need to check but as I was on my own this weekend I wasn't able to. Flashing other drivers is a habit I've tried to get out of. I drive regularly in Spain and to the Spanish it means there is a problem so they tend to just stop.
The HIDs could be removed in 30mins and are a well documented 'upgrade' for the Jag X-type I have which also have shocking dipped lights (they have projector headlights to the light dispersal thing isn't an issue)
I've just typed then deleted an entire argument FOR HID lights.
That argument is an old and very boring record, I've been there and got the T-shirt and frankly don't give a stuff for your point of view against them. If you don't like them don't use them.
If I've made a change to my car I will tell people about it so they can make an informed decision if they want to do it.

Whether or not you ever use them to flash or not, I thought it was a legal requirement - but i'm not sure if it's an MOT-able item, or if it's like the powerwash / self-levelling feature that no-one else bothers fitting.
Now if you can get away with it I might be tempted by a set...

I think it's up to the tester if a slowly-brightening bulb is operating "immediately".
...so it seems like you can do it in an MOT sense... as long as you know the tester. Shame really as I was just considering getting another set...
