Took myself and the Griff along to the fantastic VMAX IV at Bruntinghorpe last Sunday and clocked the highest speed they've seen for a Griff at this event, measured through the speed trap at 163mph. A friend of mine took a picture of what the speedo was reading at the time, see http://img41.photobucket.com/albums/v127/Painey/Griffith_Speedo.jpg

I was dead chuffed about that as the car is completely standard and seems to be running very well. Also the event itself was absolutely fantastic and if you get the chance to go to the next one then I'd strongly recommend it.

In races from standing starts up to the the hairpin before the main straight I managed to beat a Noble, 420 SEAC, BMW M Coupe, 911, Ferrari 355 etc but also got done myself many times. Managed to get faster times than the Chimps as well!

All in all great fun and was very satisfying to see the Griff holding it's own amongst such fantastic company.

All the best - Chris

P.S. If anyone knows how to post a pic on here can they tell me? thx.

Quote this to see how I did it.

Did you get that with the roof up or down?
If you tried both was there much difference?

Didn't have the roof down as it was occasionally chucking it down! Gavinr did have the roof off the SEAC which was not slow at all, I think between me and him it was one all by the end of the day. Brave man!!

Actually to be honest I was rather worried that the roof would fly off at those speeds!!

Are those white knuckles in that photo?

As I am a coward I do not think I would trust myself to push my Griff to that speed, (I have to admit no where close).
Well done that man.

A Ruf 911, a couple of mega powerful 911 turbo's which didn't just beat me but were over the horizon in a matter of seconds!

I beat a Noble up to about 120ish but then we got to a corner and it was goodbye!! They carry some serious speed round corners, truly amazing to see. Lost once to the SEAC but one back on them later. Quite difficult trying to launch a Griffith on a wet slippery track and actually get some traction though as I'm sure you can imagine!

Good show. My best was an indicated 144mph (runway)and that was fast enough!

Cheers for the information, the Tuscan S did well. I know I'm being a bit of an anorak but are there any 0-60 or 0-100mph times etc?

You must be going soft John, I was doing an indicated 145 in Belgium last year with my wife in the passenger seat and no she didn't tell me to slow down! It was the relative passing speed of the lorries on the inside that caused it! Rich...

Clocked by the fuzz at 145mph over 2/3rds mile on military runway. Took 1/3mile to slow down at that speed before overshooting the runway end. My speedo was reading late 150'smph, just goes to show how much they are out. After two runs, engine oil was like water!!!Drove home very slowly that day...zz

Don't think there are any recorded times for acceleration unless anyone there had some data logging equipment with them. The things which really stick in my mind about last Sunday were the speed that Noble goes round corners at, the rate at which very high powered porsches accelerate and lastly, how much of a good time it was!!!

Anyone know what revs he was pulling in that Griff at 167 MPH? Must have been approaching 6000...

Yep, was somewhere in the high 5,000's. Couldn't say exactly as I was trying to keep my eye on the road and the car in a straight line as it was quite windy last sunday.

I'd be interested to see what difference a Mark Adams chip/triple plenum etc would do to the revs this high up. I'm told that one of the benefits of this is an engine that revs more freely so I'd have thought that higher speeds would surely follow? If it matters my Griff showed on Austec's rolling road that peak power of 285bhp was coming at 5,100rpm. The rate of acceleration really tails off once your past that.

All the best - Chris

Hello

I was in the blue 500 chim on Sunday, for some reason mine pulled like train to 160 and then slowed up loads, I still had plenty of revs left too. It did this on every run, maybe be an aerodynamic wall?

The chip and plenum upgrades are well worth it, I have the Mark Adams chip and ACT Al upgrade system (not the carbon system), but it still makes a big difference.

Great day on Sunday

Hi Mod
I would suggest that your rev counter could be under reading ?, i guess 160mph should equate to around 6000 rpm, it must be going well to reach 160 though !

Hi Tim

Yes, the rev counter may have been misreading. Though I remember Mark Adams telling me he had raised the limiter to 6250 from 6000 revs

The car still felt to be accelerating, though much slower than at speeds less than 160. At the top end does the limiter cut in abruptly as in the lower gears, or do you gently hit the limiter and hit v-max?

Either way it was great fun on Sunday!

Thanks

Martyn.

The one time I went down that strip running on decent fuel (as opposed to TVR mania when I had crappy 95 RON in so didnt push much) I recall the 500 got to around 6K + a bit revs & just sat there. Roof off probably didnt help, but couldnt squeeze a helmeted Ed in with roof on

Regards, Ed, sans helmet
