Ripping the Motor Out
Discussion
Hi,
Iam in the process of stripping the ancillaries off the Griff motor in advance of pulling it out. I would be grateful for advice on whether to leave the gearbox attached and pull the two combined, or split them and just lift the motor out separately.
I seem to recall a similar post a while ago but the search facility is down at the min.
Cheers

I have removed and replaced engines with the box attached. There's plenty of room to do this if you have a good long reach on your engine hoist and plenty of room in the workshop.
If not, then it's not much more work to drop the box out first - remeber that the bellhousing is detachable from the box so it can come out with the engine.

So engine removal can be done with an equal amount of swearing either with or without the gearbox attached - depending on space. At least it gives me options, especially as the T5 belhousing comes off, and having thought about it, I might be a bit tight for space above the crane with engine and box together. Food for thought. Thanks for the replies.
I'm going to be going through the engine bay renewing various bits and pieces as I go. One of the other things I'm looking at is the heat sheilding round the bulkhead area. Ive looked for the original quilted style heat shield but cant seem to find any. Racing Green list it for the Chimaera then helpfully state that its no longer available. Before I buy an alternative, does any one have any recommendations. The more heat reflective the better.
thanks.

The Aluminised Glass Cloth at this link is what I used, it matches perfectly the original that was fitted by the factory on my '94 Griff, it has the appearance of being quilted in small squares. I had it made up by Arco with stitched hems and nomex thread to my template which made it rather expensive per piece but it looks a proper job.Alternatively you could just order a piece big enough, cut it slightly large (say 10mm) and fold and glue the edges to form a hem on it to give a clean edge, with hindsight I think this would have worked just as well as having it stitched.

Zircotec now do a ceramic-backed ali shield material; I've not tried using any yet but it sounds good in principle
