Whats this bit off?

Hi,

I'm currently in the process of stripping bits off my Griffith 500 engine before I pull it out. Ive taken the inlet system off and have loosely bolted it together - plenum top and bottom and intake manifold. I tipped the assembly on to one side on the garage floor and the doo-dah in the photo seemed to fall out of somewhere.

The feeler gauges next to it are to give some idea of scale.

Havent a clue what it is or even if its meant ot be anywhere near the intake system. Looks like part of a crude one way valve system.

Can anyone help please?

Crude one way valve is right, normally this would sit in the thermostat!

Brilliant.

Just been out to the garage to check and the stat is missing this piece. The damn thing must have just been lying inside the inlet manifold. Glad it didnt manage to go anywhere else.

It had jiggled loose and was making a bid for freedom
