Alternater gone?

out last night in the griff i`d only gone 5 miles down the road when the ignition light came on and over the next mile the panel lights started to dim. I turned back for home but only made it part way before the engine started to misfire under acceleration so i ducked into a garage before i got stranded by the roadside. The engine then died as it wouldn`t idle, i managed to get someone out who jumped me and i got the car the rest of the way home with the lights off, the warning light was coming and going in brightness, occasionaly flicking off but glowing brightly most of the time. I take it that this is a sign the alternator has gone, anyone offer any alternatives to that assumption? If so what other vehicle was fitted with the same unit as an N regd 5 litrehc Griff? Any one got a replacement for thiers in the past and how easy is it to replace? What am i looking at price wise.........

Could be the alternator fuse under the engine - piccies and details in the bible. If it is the alternator, cheapest option is to get it reconned as it can be a variety of faults. Easy to remove but disconnect the battery as one of the leads is live and you don't want to do any arc welding! Cost about £80 ish for the recon. Third the price of a new one.

Hi Steve, i can find no mention of an alternator fuse in the book i`ve been through every section covering the alternater 2 or 3 times and have drawn a blank?.......Martin

Just looked at your website Steve it appears my book is a first edition one (printed 2000) so i guess that explains the lack of the required info. I`ll have to get a latter copy but in the mean time cane anyone enlighten me as to where to find the fuse?.........Martin

I've had this happen in both my Chimaera and my Griff. Refurb did the trick in both cases.

Same symptoms on my car and it was the fuse. Worth checking out before taking the alternator out.

I had the same prob recently and the fuse was over tightened which caused it to fail. It is located under the car about where the drivers seat is. This was replaced after the alternator was giving out erratic voltages, which was also replaced under warranty. The alternator i had is made by magnelli and cost £485 from land rover, there are cheaper ways if arent worried about original parts. Let me know if you want my other one, it wouldnt cost much to fix.

It's in a black plastic (matchbox size) case, underneath the offside engine mount. You'll need to jack the car up to get good access. When you get the cover off have a *good* look, 'cos they can crack at the ends but still lokk ok at a quick glance.

Now that's a new one. Did you check it yourself or is this what a garage told you? Sounds a bit odd to me.

Sorted guys......many thanks to you all for your advice, the fuse was cracked at the front end and only showed itself when i gave it a gentle push. I restraightened it and retightened the bolt to nip it for the mo and she`s running sweet as a nut again. Pistonhead power saved me a large alternater bill for nothing, anyone that suggested the fuse make yourselves known to me at a meet and i`ll buy yer a pint! (sorry any offers of the fuse after this post won`t qualify you!)............Martin (now going for a spin round the block :¬) )

i was under the car when he took it off and one of the spades had cracked almost all the way through. Replaced the 80 with a 100 amp fuse. Simple job to do, not so if you havent got a jack! Invested in a jack now!

mine was located on the lower drivers side chassis rail inside the gearbox tunnel........Martin
