Clean bill of health

I'm due to pick up my new Griff at the end of next week and want to give it a clean bill of health before I start using it just for peace of mind. What items do you recommend replacing and where's the best place to purchase the parts from? The items i've listed so far are as follows:

1. Magnecor leads (Rally Design)
2. Mobil One Motorsport oil (Halfords)
3. Oil Filter (Halfords?)
4. Fuel Filter (Halfords?)
5. Coolant (Halfords)
6. Spark Plugs (Halfords?)
7. I also want to replace as many of the bushes with Polyrace bushes form Rally Design, anyone know the cost of this?
8. Alignment check (anyone know of a good place?)

Any other ideas of what I can do to get MY (can't believe I have one at last ) Griffith into perfect shape?

Dont forget the spark plug extensions. You can get these and the magnecore leads via the excellent ACT.

You can also get a new distributor cap and rotor arm from ACT (No I don't work there, but the prices and service is v.good).

Yes, ACT are good for the leads and plug extenders.

As for the laser aglingement try Horizon Motorsport in Cradley Heath, west midlands. Mike, the owner, is an ex-Tuscan race engineer and does a very good job at excellent prices. He has sorted a few problems on my Chim that no-one else could.

Rather than Halfords (which arent the cheapest by the way) have a look at you nearest Unipart dealer for some of those spares, you'll save a few quid especially on the Mobil 1.

What's the service history like? You might like to get it serviced by a good indy for peace of mind and a shiny clean start. They could do the poly bushes too, and also check for anything else that might need attention.

Buy it an engagement ring and ask it to marry you - after all you will have wined and dined it, bought it nice things and given it a jolly good servicing!

i think if you ask enough people you would replace an awfull lot of items on your Griff most for no good reason but here is a bit of info that may be of some use to you ,Halfords anti freeze ,i was recomended to buy the more expensive advanced protection antifreeze i was told its much kinder to your radiator and lasts 5years so i did ,then if you are doing that you may consider changing the steel swan neck cooling pipes in the engine bay to stainless steel ones my griff is a 2000 model but when i removed the pipes they had startet to rust inside i got the stainless pipes from ACT and the quality was outstanding, they are easy to change but you need to drain the system hence doing it when you do the antifreeze you would buy the spark plug extensions from ACT as well.Oil filter the ones the TVR garage fit are a Landrover part, Part number ERR3340 they are available everywhere i think they are only around £10 or £15 from TVR .If your car has the T5 gearbox i would recomend changing the gearbox oil to Mobilube 1 75W-90 fully synthetic gear oil my handbook says 1.4 ltr but it should say 2.4 ltr i hope this is of some help regards Steve.

No doubt but the radiator will spring a leak before then and you'll have to replace all the coolant anyway!

Good point, simpo two, the Griff hand book states a 50:50 mix (well mine does) so any brand should be fine.

My rads back in for re-build again as I type. I was going to go for an Ally one this time but having just moved house has left me skint, At lest I got a nice new double garage to work in now.

Thanks for that, but I’ve already taken it in for a re-core, pick it up on Monday.

I tried a new place fond in the phone book and went in for a chat with the guys to see if they had any ideas on a more permanent fix. They told me they could build up extra solder around the end plates to make it stronger, all this with a new core for £100. I’ll let you know how it works out.

Not long now, three and a half days

The rad looks good, she’s all back together now cant wait to go to work tomorrow (err today).

The guy that fixed it showed me the old core and were it had failed he also explained what he did to build up the new one, to help prevent it from happening again all for £105 cash.
