oil consumption: is this normal

My Griff has always been using quite a bit of oil (about 1 liter per 800 km) but the other day I drove it from Holland to my new home in France, some 1.000 km. When I checked the oil level the next day, I couldn't measure anything, zero. It took 4 liters to bring it back to normal level!
On the trip I did average around 190-210 km/h (don't tell the "gendarme"), but still, I didn't expect to burn this hugh amount of oil.
Car was fully serviced before I left and oil level was "full".

Any thoughts?

I think it's high. During our last holiday to Italie wich involved many autobahn kilometers at high speeds (120+) and spirited mountain roads, we only used 1.5 liters of oil on 2500 km. What kind of oil do you use, personaly I use Castrol RS 10W60.

Yes that's very high. IIRC they normally use about 0.5 - 1.0 litre per 1,000 miles. I guess you're either burning it or it's leaking out...?

SOunds like a leak to me, if it was burning it Id expect it to look like a diesal at the exhaust. Check theyve put the sump plug in properly and that the filter is screwed on al the way.

yes, I use Castrol RS 10W60 too. 120+ I assume you mean mph, not kph.
I know it's high, I think it's outrageous, but question is: driving for 7 hours at around 200 kph, is it that abnormal (meaning something is wrong) or have more drivers experienced this?

Strange thing is that there is no evidence of a leak; engine bay isn't dirty and neither is the back of the car. Oil filter seems firmly attached.

Yes Gerjo, I do mean Mph. We did about 700 km. through Germany as fast as we could, meaning on average 160 kph. and were possible 220. On some pieces we pushed her to the limit wich was about 265 kph. (165 mph) on the speedo. I don't know how fast that was for real, but it certainly felt like 265. It surprised me that even traveling that speeds she only used 17 liter per 100 km. For the English PH visiters, I had a party last night so you have to do the math yourself.. LOL

It's not a diesel... She's burning petrol not oil. Well she does burn oil I guess, but not as much as she burns petrol.

I may have had a bit to much, but I still manage to keep the oil and petrol seperated..

Gerjo, I just noticed your website, very nice indeed. However you forgot to put up special rates for TVR owners.

TVR drivers automatically get a nice discount, no need to advertise that
At this moment we only have quite simple wooden chalets, not really for TVR owners. Next year the first new more luxurious villa's will be ready.

Back to the oil consumption: took the Griff out today to see if there is a leak. It wasn't the case and it ran beautifully although I upset a few villagers with the sports exhaust I'm afraid. Seems everything is fine, still strange though. Guess I have to carry at least 4 liters of Castrol RS for cross Europe trips.
