Speedos...

... no i am not asking for advice prior to my holidays!

my speedo has stopped working (Speed and milage), but my garage says the sensor (gearbox mounted) is working fine.

just taken it out, but before i send it off to speedy cables for fixing, is there anything i can do to check it?

Mine has stopped too so ive ordered this new sensor and tester so i can be sure which is broke,even if the sensor is at fault the speedo will still have a blank mileage display.

Thanks Stephen, I did look at this but because my sensor is tucked up on the gearbox (92 pre-cat) it would be very difficult to fit.

Now i have the Speedo out of the car, can i simply put a 0-12v voltage across the connections and expect the meter to read a speed, or does it have to be some sort of pulse voltage?

IMO a simple voltage won't work, it would need to be pulsed in some way.

Can't be much help I'm afraid except I'd check cabling and relay first - they're easier to fix.

look at the sticky post at the top of the griffth forum....... you will find it hard to fix the precat speedo in time especially when sensor gives up the ghost.... be quick though as a about to commit to speedy cables

Top tip from a colleague at work with regards Speedy Cables: put a large, clear sticker on the speedo with your details before you box it up. Busy people, lots of instruments on the shelf, paperwork gets detached....
Mine is back (very quickly I have to say) after being re-re-calibrated. I have yet to persuade the dash back in to see if they got it right this time.

I have some electronic knowledge from a previous life and I've had my pre cat speedo to bits and its not very clever inside - there are a number of bodges to the circuit board which presumably are TVR in origin but don't know for sure.
I've decided to bite the bullet and go for a new one along with Hoover above.
I am however sticking with the original sender - last I heard Rimmers still had some and I need mine for the ecu.

The speedo has arrived at SCs today. It crossed an email i recieved from them saying they dont fix Stewart Warner gauges anymore! Hopefully i will be able to pursuade them to have a quick look anyway, now they have got it.

I have looked at the system in the 'sticky' thread, but have further questions, so i'll go off and post them there.
