Hi,

Am hoping for a little bit of help with my wiring loom please. Bit of a long story but I am fixing up my Grif (it is a 1999 serp model) which suffered a small engine fire. I have repaired the loom, but in the worst affected area (alternator, coil etc) I now have a few wires but no idea where they go. I have consulted TVR and Landrover wiring diagrams but am getting conflicting information. There are basically 3 areas where I need help please:

1) Alternator - I know where the large red wire goes (from starter motor) but I also have a small brown wire with a nut on the connector, am pretty sure at least one other wire also needs to go on. Can someone with a similar aged car to my own please tell me which colour wires thay have got going where?

2) Coil - I know the wire coming across from the distributor goes to the ignition amplifier but no idea about other wires that go to the coil. Same as above, any chance somone can tell me what colour wires go where?

3) Sensor - Final one (thanks for sticking with me so far!) there is a sensor down near the oil pressure sender. I have looked in the Steve Heath bible but still not sure what it is and what wire goes to it. There seems to be a port that goes towards the water pump so I am thinking coolant temp, any ideas?

Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for any help you can give! I haven't posted pictures as I am not sure how to host/post picture but will give it a go if anyone thinks pictures wil be useful.

Cheers...

Mine is a 94 preserp but the wire near the oil sensor is probably the oil pressure light which is seperate to the gauge sensor. On mine and a few others one small wire at the alternator is not connected but just tied back, good luck, John.

Mines at 97, it’s on stands in the garage at the moment, don’t know how much farther up north you are, but if you want a look just drop me a line and we can sort something.

Cheers,

Simon.

You only need 2 wires on the alternator. The one going to the terminal marked "W" is a tacho output usually used on diesel Land Rovers.

There should be 2 white-with-blue-stripe wires attached to the negative on the coil. They go to the tacho and the ECU speed input.

At the back of the alternator there were three wires on my 98 500. The thick one that goes to the battery via the 100A fuse attached to the RHS engine mount, a thin brown bolted on to a stud and a thin White / Grey fitted to a spade. At the other end of the loom only the thin brown was connected. It went to the charge warning light which has a switched live at the other side of the lamp. The thin W/G came to an end at the Engine loom Body loom plug inside the car.

There are two oil pressure sensors, both at the front RHS of the engine, one is the Pressure gauge signal, this attaches to the flat round sensor underneath the oil pump with a spade. On my car it was Green/Blue. The Oil pressure warning light connects to a separate pressure switch higher up the engine and is not part of the engine loom, this wire goes via the inner wing and from memory is Brown / Green.

There are two temperature sensors. One for the ECU and one for the gauge they are front RHS of engine roughly behind the Dizzy. White / Brown for the Gauge don’t have the ECU one recorded.

Sorry didn’t record all the colours around the coil as I knew I wouldn’t need them. There is a White brown that is the taco feed which goes to the coil via a small black box but that is all noted around the coil.

Hi all,

sorry for the slow reply, I have been working really long hours and so not able to get on my computer and even more importablty finishing too late to work on my car!

Anyway, big thanks to you all for such speedy and detailed responses! This has already helped a lot: In particular, I do have brown wire with a nut/connector which I knew went to the alternator but the above picture shows where, so thanks for that. Also, I do have some blue/white wires and will be able to fit them to the neg side of the coil.

So, 3 down and now only a few to go! I will check which wires I have got left because the info I have been given regarding wires to sensors will help a lot too.

I think one area which I am still stuck is with any additional wires that go to the coil (in addition to the blue/white ones).

Can anyone please post a picture of their coil connections from a similar age car to mine?

Thanks also for the offers for me to come see your cars for a look-see, I will fall back on that option if I am still stuck after the weekend. I am based in Tadcaster (about 10 miles from York), so will see who is nearest!

Cheers

Are these any help, some pics of mine, no light blue all black and white, the lower two on the coil go to the Ignition Amp

I'm just off the A63 near Brough, so not too far.

Cheers,

Simon.

Just looking at the post and noticed the blue and white ones you referred to

but on mine these disappear into the loom, the ones to the top of the coil are black and white.

Hi,

Thanks again for the help so far with this!!

Just as an update: I am happy with the alternator connections. Have fitted the thin brown wire & also connected the grey/white (even though it probably doesn't do anything). I have also conencted up the sires that come from the dizzy and go to the ignition amplifier and coil. So, progress made then....

However, coil still not fully wired up & regarding the coil: I think my wiring is more similar to Steve_V8s who has posted above. Basically it has to do with the blue/white wires. A lot of you have them coming out to the coil area but not connecting to the coil and then returning again via white/black wires.

I don't have any white/black wires in the area on my car(for the white/blues to return along) and so suspect that my blue/white wries don't simply return but actually connect to the negative on the coil as per Steve_V8s's car.

so, I now have the following wires left over to find a home for:

Black wire: I think this may go to the (+) on the coil
2x white/blue wires: I think that these go to the (-) on the coil
(For those that have the blue/white wires going to their coil, can you please confirm that a black wirte also goes to the postive terminal, or if not what other wire?)

Black wire: ?
Black/light green: ?
White/Brown: ?

However, I do have two sensors which currently have no wire attached to them.

1st sensor: behind the dizzy cap, takes a sigle wire and it looks like the crimp/connector will need to be a round one as the terminal onto the sensor is round, not a spade.

2nd sensor: I mentioned before is down near the oil pump (but isn't the main oil pressure sensor) and takes a single wire.

I have taken a picture of both of these sensors and will try to post them. If anyone with a late car recognises the sensor and knows what colour the wire going to it needs to be then it would be great if you can let me know.

Sorry was going to go to a meet this weekend but had some urgent DIY to take care of (sattelite dish fell off the wall) and so didn't make it :-(

Thanks,
Phil

This one is the alternative temperature gauge sensor. To use it you need a resistor in line (37 ohm i think, will check). I swapped to this one when the bottom one failed as a temporary measure, that was years ago.

Not sure about the other two, will have a look.

Hi Simon,

Thanks for your reply. You seem to suggest that it is an alternative sensor, does this mean that it isn't necessarily used?

One of the wires that I have left over does have some kind of a resistor in line. I will check to see which one it is...

Thanks,
Phil

Phil,

Been away this week, will get my head in the engine bay tomorrow.

Regarding the temp gauge sender, yes this one is normally un-used. Most cars use the one on the end of a tube lower down on the front of the engine, mine did originally. It gives a wider range reading but some my self included have doubts about it’s location.

Hi Steve,

No, sorry, I haven’t got it going yet.

I have been working really late at work all week and so haven’t been able to get in the garage. However, I have been compiling all of the info in preparation for tackling it again this weekend. Thanks for your detailed e-mail, I will see what I can do with the info.

Thanks also to Simon for your latest post and continued support, I know this has been ongoing now for a while….

So, this is the latest:

It’s clear to me that I’m not looking for a wire to the standard landy temp sensor.
All others sensors etc are wired up already (hopefully correctly!)
- except the Oil pressure warning light and I am looking for a switched live to go to it.
Ignition amplifier is wired up to the “+” & “-“ terminals as required.
The only wires I am really looking for now are the ones that go to the coil (in addition to the Ig amp ones).

I suspect my car is similar to Steve’s and so the white/blue’s go to the negative, which means I am only trying to understand which wires go to the positive side of the coil. Suspect that the tacho wire isn’t required, so I need to identify and eliminate it and so there may only be one or two other wires to connect that go to the “+” side of the coil And from info received, supply a switched live inside the car).

Steve, you mentioned a Landy wiring diagram you might have that shows the coil connects. If you can lay your hands on it easily, then that would be great.

Cheers,
Phil

According to the original 4.3 TVR drawing there are two White Blue wires from the negative side of the coil. One goes to the ECU to tell it the engine RPM the other goes to the taco. There is a short white blue that goes between the coil and the ignition amp. An additional wire possibly yellow white feeds a switched 12v supply. That goes to the coil +ve and the ignition amp. On later cars and on mine I remember there being some in line diodes but I can’t recall which wires they were in and they are not shown on any of the diagrams I have. My guess is it will run without them but they were fitted to stop spikes going where they shouldn’t.

The early landy diagram simply shows the switched supply to the coil +ve and a pair of wires to the ignition amp. Being a carb engine there was no need for the ECU signal and the Tacho was taken from the alternator.

Whatever the colours it is fairly simple. You have a pair of wires that take the engine rpm back to the ECU and Taco, these both connect to the coil -ve. You have two wires from the ignition amp to the coil and you have one wire which is the supply.

Remember that if you are looking with a meter to check for the switched supply it probably comes via the immobiliser so you will have to turn the ign switch on and disarm the immobiliser as well to get a voltage.
