hello,

I am a new proud owner of a 95 griff 500 with 30000 miles....

On saturday, a 500 miles trip to bring the beast to its new home under heavy rain, several stops, several starts, no issues.

yesterday, I tried to start ...but no success !

Alarm remote is black, with 2 small buttons and a light at the top right.

Click on a button: car opens.

Turn key on ignition immediatly (seems that immobiliser starts after 30s), nothing happen : no sound (either from pump or relays), no light, no live...

Fuel pump does not prime, starter does not start, dash indicators does not move.

In addition, light, warning, door, power windows work fine ...but trunk release, wipers, radio and ventilation do not.

What I checked:
- battery ok ( and "disconnect" test performed)
- all fuses in the fuse box OK (tested)
- relays on the fuse box plugged

On my caterham, I had the same issue and it was linked to an unplugged relay so it was my first guess...

What do you think ?
- immobiliser ? (but why nothing is working at all, even boot release ?)
- relay ? (which relay associates engine/fuel pump, wipers, boot release, radio, ventilation ?)
- new owner bad luck ?

thanks for your help !!!

(still in love, even if a bit pist off..)

Hi Jerome

I thought the all night long about your problem and just had an idea about your problem. Have you checked the big 100A fuse situated under the engine ?

Otherwise it looks like the antistarting system is doing crazy things as alarm and door opening systems are still working properly.

Any other opinions ?

I'm not an expert here but on my '97 500 there is also another (80amp) fuse near the battery and that is the fuse for the feed to the fuse board. I have heard of problems with them and there is a fix which is simply to replace it with a proper fuse rather than one of the TVR stamped aluminium ones - mine now has a proper 100amp fuse instead (approved by my insurers as well) so that might be worth a look assuming yours is the same (can't guarentee that as I think the arrangements did change but not sure when).
The fuse on the chassis rail I think is for the alternator so not sure what effect that would have on starting unless it had gone and the battery has run down so could be worth checking if battery is charged.
No doubt some more knowledgeable people will be along soon to help and maybe correct my thoughts.

It could be many things but as your fuses are OK but you have no boot lock release I would look at the ignition switch. Certainly on my 500 the boot release voltage was taken from the ignition live feed.

Easy to check, voltmeter on 12 volts in to ignition switch, measure output with ignition on. If no input then problem between battery/alternator and the switch.

Best of luck

thanks for the guess mates..

what I have done this morning, without success :
- fob has new battery
- behind the glove box, I checked the switch button which arms in case of accident
- testing of the fuse located on the cable next to battery

I will look at the 100A fuse underneath the car and check the ignition switch.

I am still thinking that the alarm/immobiliser is not the issue as it would not explain the lack of power for radio, or gauges, or boot release.

Actually, I try to focus on electrical problems.

the solution is the link between ignition (fuel pump, starter), radio, ventilation, gauges and boot release !!!

When such achievement will be done, I will have made good progress...

...maybe...

Same symptoms with mine (I think only the windows worked). It was similar fix to Jimed, an after market fuse on a cable coming from the battery, don,t know what it was for (immobiliser?) but it was a 15 amp fuse and thickness of cable suggested this was too low, replaced with 30 amp, no further issues.

70A ignition relay?

Just to make sure my understanding is correct, the fuse on the black cable coming from battery is a flat one as this one, for example :

I checked with a voltmeter and it works fine (80 written on it).

The 70a ignition relay in the fuse box is located at the top right (number 5 spot). By the way, I realized that slot 6 is empty but manual states that Courtesy Light Delay Unit should be in there (no link to my issue I think as it seems that it was like this before)

mates,

I think that, thanks to your guess, I might have found teh road to go.

this forum is just an amazing source of information for TVR newbies...

Further to a deep search, I found such post from a guy havin the exact same issues...
"I had sudden power failure whilst driving the other day. All the gauges dropped and anything ignition related seems not to be working, eg no fuel pump priming etc. The immobilser light is also not lit as well as the doors not unlocking via the TOAD remote.
The light, windows and even the clock are working though."

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

arghhh... ""igntion relay" solution was investigated but no real feedback..

surprise, after an even deeper search (my wife starts to hate the car cause I spent the all night on the car or internet... ), I found another post from the same guy:
"Turned out to be the ignition relay and the fuse that controls the heater, instruments etc. Thanks for the advice."

YES (...maybe).

I will get anew realy tomorrow and let you know...

Further to above findings and your suggestion, a new ignition relay has been purchased (60A was the only available) + all the fuses connected to non working items changed (even if such fuses have tested before).

a little pray to the God of French Tvr Newbies (this god does not usually get a lot of prayers..) and...I can hear the fuel pump...

Engine starts the next second but without the expected friendly V8 music.

Quick look under the bonnet and a disconnected hose is suspected and reconnected.

"Ho oui, c'est bon ça"

> Yeah, baby, yeah...

Thanks for you support guys, you saved my day !
