Starter motor!!??

For a while now when I turn the key to "start" I hear the solenoid clicking but not turning the starter motor. It seems to be worse when the engine is cold. On the second or third turn it starts fine. Pulled the starter and by operating the spring-loaded pin in the solenoid housing by hand the contacts make OK. The solenoid plunger has a sticky lubricant on it, should I clean it and leave it dry or a bit of grease? Any help or comments appreciated, cheers, John.

Stripped and cleaned mine years back when I started getting the hot start issue. Anyway I re-assembled it with silicone grease, been fine ever since.

Hi Simon, I only pulled the solenoid housing off and cleaned, greased where the "piston" runs. I put it back but the same problem, turn the key 2 or 3 times before the starter engages; I can hear the solenoid operating and am thinking the sealed high current contacts are not making properly. Maybe it's starter out and try it on the bench, see you Thursday, HEY SPEND! where are you!!!!
