no main beam, driving or instrument lights

I took the Griff on a 160 mile round trip Friday and as usual, she ran faultless.

On my way back home I switched on the lights and first noticed that the instrument lights were not on (checked the switch under the dash too) and as it got darker realised I had no dipped/main beam, or the driving lights (spot lights) together with instrument lights gone.

I did have park lights though.

At first I thought it may be a fuse but looking at the layout of the fuse box on the bible and hand book I see the instrument lights and main/dipped are on different fuses - too much of a co-incidence for both to go at the same time.

Could it be a relay that is a gonner?

I have not had time to chase the fault - thought I'd ask here for ideas first.

Any suggestions welcome.

Main light switch, missing or bad earth? The main earth also links to the others I think, so could explain why all have gone out.

It's the dash / ignition fuse that affects all those - you've blown the control circuit not the one that sends the real power to each device.

Thanks boss - I take it the fuse blew for a reason..not just a dodgy fuse.

I'll replace the fuse and see what happens?

Typically it's the heater stuff thats on that circuit that causes problems? Easy enough to see if all works OK with heater blower / control valve motors off then fuse blows when heater is exercised?

I changed fuse no 11 and 20 but still no main beam (the fuses looked fine when I removed them).

Heater fan and heater works perfect.

I pressed the light switch, and when I then push the indicator stalk forward, spot lights do not come on, but when I pull the stalk back as if to flash the lights, the spot lights do light up.

Wondering if it could be the light switch itself?

Theres a diode in there somewhere IIRC, but may be as simple as the feed from the light switch to the steering column has come off? (the multi feeds behind the light switches can be bit of a mare & the headlights are chained off the sidelight switch..)

I switched on the side and main light switches again today - no joy, but fiddling with the side light switch (on off, on off etc) got the main lights to come on as they should.

Going to clean the switches and see what that brings.

Just a double pole latching switch, Maplins sold them for @£2 as easy to replace as try & repair.
