Spanner Sizes

Just getting ready for a major body off overhaul through winter and have decided to man up and buy spanners for every eventuality!! I have all things metric but when it comes to imperial my choices are much less. So I decided to search on the internet for all different imperial sizes and cannot come up with a full list.

Has anyone got a definitive list for me to go by? Is it just AF or do I need Whitworth and BSF as well? What sizes do I go up to - anything over 1 AF?

I have seen Iains article on the Griff pages and thats a good start. Apols if this has been done before but search engine hasnt delivered much.

Machine mart do all ....great socket sets & spanners,
Ive got a corvette as well as the griff....... so AF set required as well as metric,

Thanks Quinny - I already have the full range of quality metric stuff and have now ordered a comprehensive range of AF. Anything else I will get when I need it.

Getting a few good quality strong af sockets in 3/8-5/8 should cover everything.. You can easily destroy plenty of the inferior sockets on things like stretch head bolts

I do think good quality AF hex bit sockets are quite important, particularly around the diff area, once the torque is broken a set of ball ended ones makes life a lot more tolerable as well

Decent nut splitters, stud pullers (forget easy outs IMHO), drills & taps.. are likely just as important for your sanity when you hit little challenges.

I have tried several makes of nut splitters all have proved useless, which type have you found OK?

Mole wrenches are very handy for holding blind bolt heads etc. when you are working the other side of a panel losening the nut. Both large and small equally useful.

I got a Facom set, comparatively expensive but the cheap draper, machmart.. ones are just stocking fillers so a complete waste of money IMHO. Sometimes tools that last forever and save you time + frustration are worth their weight in gold I find

Many thanks, you are spot on, with the cheaper models the nuts tend to destroy the splitters rather than vice versa. Will get some Facom ones
