Question for the electrics gurus

A few years ago I took wires from the MIL bulbs for the indicators and put LED repeaters just above the steering wheel cowl, so I have a pair of these to remind me my indicators havent self cancelled (not that it does any ruddy good, I'm constantly being flashed for having an indicator on)
As I'm about to send my dash away for veneering I'd like to put a single LED higher up into the dash. So how would I wire the LED to both repeaters without causing problems.

Or would it be easier to put 2 LEDs in there ?

Done this on mine Ian, just tap into the turn indicators already in the dash(display) and couple them through two diodes to the LED you want to light. Ground the other side of the LED and bob is your fathers brother.

No Ian, just one green one, below the ignition LED.

Also removed the two turn indicators from the diplay thing. Shortened it and centralised it.

Sounds like I need a diode on each circuit leading to the LED then.

Next question - and I really do apologise for this in advance - but what the feck is a diode - like a resistor ?
Do they sell different flavours and if so what do I ask for.

I have a Maplin near work so picking something up from there is easy.

Just ask for a couple of 1 amp diodes.

Basically, a diode only allows current to flow one way, so imagine the two indicator inputs to the LED, the diodes stop the current flowing to the N/S indicators when the O/S are flashing and vice versa.

I'd just go into Maplin and ask them. 1N4001's are 24p and are overkill, but will do the job. You'll need a resistor to limit the current to the LED. They'll also sell you an LED bezel which will help you mount it. I reckon it'll cost you less than £1.50

I already have the existing resisted LEDs I could reuse but I might go mad and buy a LED with a polished bezel.

I'm at risk of spending more than £2 here. Spend will take my Yorkshire passport off me next time he sees me

I fitted a small piezzo buzzer and hid it in the steering cowling, its about the size of a fruit pastel

Aha, I've already got piezo buzzers, one on each circuit behind the speakers in the rear bulkhead and wired into the indicators in the boot.
But I do like the idea of having it in the cowl Andy, can you hear it well in there?

How the hell am I going to wire all this?

+ve from Left indicator to diode to piezo to +ve LED
+ve from Right indicator to diode to piezo to +ve LED
-ve from somewhere behind the dash to piezo to -ve LED

Sorry if I have missed something here, but, why not try to fix the cause for the indicators not self-cancelling?

The self cancelling mechanism is normally a collar on the shaft of the steering column with a lug on it that contacts one of two arms on the indicator stalk.

Last time I came across this problem (although not on a TVR) it was that the collar had split and was free to spin on the shaft a 50p part solved the issue.

While you have the dash off, and presumably the steering wheel off it should be relatively easy to check this first.

Thanks for the idea and solution Brian.
The indicators do self cancel, but only when I have applied more than about 1/3 of a turn of the steering wheel.

I know its my driving style, because I make every effort to smooth out and straight line corners and especially roundabouts, but the downside is the indicators often not self cancelling.

I installed the existing LEDs after someone pulled out of a left hand side junction near a roundabout because they saw my left indicator and thought I was going into the road they were coming out of.
That I was probably doing 50mph didn't seem to register

You're not going around corners fast enough. If you hang the tail out the opposite-lock will cancel the indicators!
