Hi all,

I'm sure this has been covered here before but i'm having problems with the fuel pump. To give the full scenario-

Fuel pump not priming.
Immobiliser clicks when disarmed.
Dash whacked on LHS.
Engine cranks.
12v across fuel pump terminals.
ECU and pump relays checked and swapped.

Still nothing.

Is there a chance that it could be the fuel pump unit itself? I've had it off the car and wired it up using a 12v battery, it kind of kicked into life at first but then was very noisy and died. Then it would only work sporadically.

Any help would be great- it's quite a frustrating problem as it could be a number of things.

Thanks, James

Aussie John

If it won't work with 12v across it then it has passed its sell-by date; new pump needed.

They can jam if they get dirt in them, so reverse the 12 volt connection so the pump spins backwards that can spin the dirt out, but Id tend to agree a new one is in order.

Evening,

I had this problem, it ended up being the metal square relays separate to the fuse board etc.
First I removed them and gave them a gentle tap and the car started fine after, I have since replaced them and no problems at all.

Hope this helps.

But 12v at the pump says, knackered pump.

Not being familiar with the pump myself, can you access the brushes?

Not easily as the pump canister is crimped at the end to hold the whole motor and pump inside. You can bend the crimping out, and pull out the guts, but there will be nothing servicable inside.

It also has an integral non reverse valve so I wouldn't think wiring it the wrong way wouldn't achieve very much?

High guys
I am a newby. My friend had exactly the same fuel pump problem and it was a faulty relay which is located next to the fuses in the footwell. Details of which relay operates the fuel pump are in the griff handbook

The motor still spins backards quite happily and kicks the muck out, that hopefully you can drain out with any remaining fuel in the inlet, but no you dont get a reverse flow as such. I found this out the hard way when bits of rust from the fuel tank used to jam the pump up on a regular basis (No filter fitted by Ginetta at this point). A quick reverse of the connections used to get me homeward bound for a while until it would do it again, and again, and again. New pump an filter, fuel tank sealed internally with an anti rust compound, and a strong magnet on the tank bottom to hold any swarf/ rust flakes seem to have cured it.smile

I think they have a ball check valve in them.
