Ahhh the joys of old TVRs! driving

After a marathon day at Carl Baker yesterday (the man is a total legend but that's for another thread!), I have a few questions for the experts.

I have a 4.5BV which I believe to be in a very high state of tune. Invoices I have indicate all sorts of work done over the years and I was intrigued to see a mapping session with Mark Adams back in 2005 involving the installation of an OMEX module. It didn't say which one and I couldn't find any signs of it so assumed it had been removed subsequently.

Wrong!

Whilst fitting my new alarm and sorting my stereo wiring Carl came across an Omex box behind the dash that has power to it and appears to be wired into the main loom. Silly me - I had assumed I would find it either in place of or alongside the original ECU!

I am fairly sure its an OMEM150 which I believe Mark recommended a while back. It certainly looks like this:

Soooo, I am guessing that the OMEX kit controls the ignition and the fueling is left with the 14CUX. Is that right? If so what is it, well, doing?? I'm fairly sure the 14CUX has a MA chip and there are bills for his RR time to verify. The car also has ACT manifolds/triple plenum.

I've been wanting to get the car mapped again, partly for long term peace of mind and partly as I feel it isn't fueling particularly efficiently (my layman analysis only - won't idle cold, fuel stench on start up - more than I would expect, shunting at 1500-2000rpm, splattering my driveway, massive over-run popping - don't mind this symptom!). The car has only done 3500 miles in the 6 years since the OMEX fitting and has had a precautionary rebuild in that time as well - I'm currently running mineral oil on advice from Austec to try and bed it in as oil consumption was high on fully synthetic with no obvious leaking. I should point out that the car runs like a dream when on the move (could it just be a very aggressive map causing the cold start/shunt issues??)

I know I need to speak to Mark at some point but want to educate myself a little bit - can anyone make any sense of that ramble?? smile

I would give Mark Adams a call. It sounds like it just needs re-mapping on the RR.

MA should be able to get yours running very nicely indeed especially with the added benefit of the OMEX.

Is your Dizzy still fitted?.. Is it taking a pick-up from inside?.. as you say.. what is it doing??

MA keeps all the car's details on file so give him a call.. he'll know exactly what's been done and how to sort it out .. smile

Distributor still there and standard looking (to me). The Omex kit was the thick end of £700 inc. VAT even in 2005 so I would hope for tangeable results.

I know all roads point to Mark and i will catch up with him eventually - just wanted to do some research and manage my expectations. Ideally I want to have some idea of whats going on and what may need doing rather than have a totally blank canvas turn into a really expensive RR session while we start from square 1.

I also have larger injectors from memory but although hardly any miles done it was several years ago in some cases. Austec who hosted the original mapping for example have changed computer systems and don't have the records I was hoping for.

Maybe I should clean my stepper motor and hope for the best!! jester

One man's £700 is not the same as another man's £700.......But I agree with you... Let's see hehe

Yup, looks like the 150 model I had fitted until recently. The £700 is about right too. There'll likely be a transducer bracket machined from ali alloy alongside the crank pulley wheel and a four lobe trigger wheel behind that.

The 150 certainly sharpened up the response of my motor in the mid-range and gave a healthy torque increase. Never had issue with cold starts or anything else for that matter. Mark Adams is certainly the man to speak to smile

Ahh thx Bruce. I saw you had an Omex fitted when I ran a search on this site. Lovely car!!

As it seems mine has been operating all along I won't have a before and after comparison to make. Certainly the throttle response and power curve feel exceptional on my backside dyno but they are characteristics of the basic BV set up anyway.

I'll have a poke around at the weekend and see if there's anything like you describe. Don't suppose you have any pics?

Dunno that I have any shots James but, you'll recognise it when you see it. Just to the left (nearside) of the crank pulley. The trigger wheel is only of small diameter so likely to be obscured unless you get underneath the car for a shuffty. The 150 is an ideal accompaniment to the MA chip.

Something else to add to the mix is the pattern of oil use. Mineral oil was going better but I had to put in half a litre today after a 200 mile round trip to Carl Baker mid week. Not only is the usage still high it doesnt seem to be linear either??
