Lubricating Bonnet Release Cable

The bonnet has been a bit funny to shut for a while - sometimes it is fine and other times not. I've tried adjusting the lock position and also the cable tension all of which has made me think it was sorted only to find that the next day it seems little different. This morning it wouldn't lock again; I noted that the release handle had stayed pulled out slightly so pushed it in and could then shut the bonnet. I'd talked to Heath at X Works about this yesterday and he had had a quick look and all seemed to be OK after that so I called him this morning and he thinks that the cable needs lubricating. Apparently this is easy to do as the inner (incl nipple) will slide out of the outer which is presumably retained in the car so it all sounds simple. Engine oil is the correct stuff to use as grease can harden after time - so question is has anyone done this and are there any precautions to take? (eg should I set the lock using a screwdriver or something before I take the cable off or anything??). Any experience/thoughts appreciated.

My release cable (Chim) was stiff as hell, and every time I opened the bonnet, I had to ensure I actively pushed the cable handle back in as far as it would go - otherwise, as you say, the bonnet wouldn't lock down again.

My garage has just replaced it with a new cable (OMP I think?) - and it slides beautifully now, and the handle returns to position without me having to push it back in, so the bonnet locks again 1st time I close it.

Replacement was better than trying to repair the original, for me...
