A slight hiccup when running

I thought I would consult the experts on this.

Once warm the car every now and then hiccups when accelerating and it does not seem to accelerate as well as I think it should, but that might just be my imagination. Also when warm and I pull to a stop the Revs are not idling and sometimes they drop so low the engine stalls.

I have checked the plugs and they all seem fine, they are clean and are seem to be well seated and connected with the magnacor leads that are in good condition, the stepper motor is clean, connected and seated correctly and the distributor was replaced about four months back during a service.

Is it possibly the coil having some sort if issue as the car gets hotter, it appears to be fine when starting from cold and only seems to occur when hot.

Any ideas of what to take a look at next or should I just try a replacement coil and see what happens.

Could be a fuel injection sensor fault though, rather than ignition? Tracking it down by substitution could get expensive, if I were you I'd take it to a TVR specialist where they will diagnose the problem for you.

Thanks Peter, I have a brand new coil sitting on my desk, so I will give that ago, if it is not that I will have to take it to someone to have a look.

Fitted a new battery as the old one wasn't holding a charge and hey presto - feels like a new car. I think the old battery wasn't able to 'subsidise' the alternator when the engine was idling, so it'd start to stall, then the ECU (or whatever) would kick in to action and make the revs pick up, the alternator would do its thing, the car would be happy, so lulled into a false sense of security the revs would drop again etc etc.

is your ecu giving a fault code? even when the fault is corrected, the car may not give full power until the ecu is reset

I have no idea as I do not know how to read the fault code. It sounds like I need to pop it into a garage for a quick look.

probly good idea as i dont kno if they can read old fault codes after you have reset it

This is interesting. I have just replaced the three year old coil with a new one, and I have just taken her for a short spin but made sure she was hot enough for the fans to keep doing there business, and so far she is working fine. No rev hunting on idle and no hiccups.

I admit it is a bit of a simplistic test and a one trip drive is not indicative of having cured the problem, but it appeared okay.

I will go for a few more drives later and see what happens.
