When ever I remove the filler cap I get a huge 'whoosh and hiss'.

My car has always suffered from cutting out, on the odd occassion, at junctions when I come to a sudden halt and someone has suggested the fuel tank is forming a vacuum as the fuel cap is too 'sealed'. I have heard that some people have cut a groove in the rubber ring in the cap to relieve the pressure.

My question is do you just cut a 'v' in across the rubber (not going all the way through) or do you actually cut a gap in the rubber so it no longer joins (if you see what I mean !! ) ??

This may have nothing to do with the cutting out, but seems like a good idea as the pressure build up does cause the tank to 'bong' every now and again as though its sucking its sides in !!

There should be a pressure release on the tank that goes to the carbon canister at the front of the car (located in the o/s front wing. If the pipe has become blocked or squashed by an overtightened tiestrap that will stop the breather working.
On the filler neck you will see a pipe about 6" down that then goes to a valve the pipe then runs out of the bottom of the boot along the n/s of the chassis crosses over to the o/s and feeds into the inner wing where the washer bottle is.

Hope this helps

Cheers Chris smile

I'll have to pop it up on a ramp and have a look under the car if theres no problem at the tank end.
I'd do it now but the ramps I've got access to in work are too much of a step up to get the Griff on !!

Still interested to hear from anyone who has cut a 'v' in the seal too, I can't remember who mentioned it to me, could have been at the NEC in November - V8GRF possibly ??

No idea about the breather but my griff being a '97 has a cork seal in the filler cap not a rubber one so does breath. I've never noticed any air whoosh at all. Used to have a Scimitar that did though and ended up buying a replacement cap.

I think it was me that mentioned it, but I've not done it, although it has been mentioned on here several times as a solution. I think it tends to happen on cars with replacement caps that create a better seal than the originals.

I had the 'whoosh' once just after I'd got the Griff and wondered if I'd overtightened the filler cap so now just put it on and turn slightly firmly beyond the retainers so as not too tight and not had the problem since. I did ask X Works about it and one possible cause is the pipe to the canister being kinked and not allowing air through but they had a quick look at mine and it was OK.

Thought it was you who mentioned it David smile
I'll check for any kinks as soon as I can get it up on ramps, maybe next Monday at Mech Repairs in Cheltenham. I have an important appointment with Mr Adams and a rolling road at said establishment smile
Hopefully should solve the cutting out too once set up as it should be after 2 years of tweaking.

I think that X Works pulled the carpet back from round the tank to check the pipe - not something that I've done but it pulled off and back again with no problem (experience eh!!) so certainly some of it can be checked from inside the car and that is where the tank is and no ramp needed.

Rather than cut the seal I would reccomend using tiny drill bit and drill a hole in the filer cap. It only needs to be a tiny pin sized hole.
