I have lost 1st, 3rd and reverse on my 500 with a Rover gearbox. The gear selector seems very sloppy but 2nd 4th and 5th can (just about) be selected - is this likely to be a gearbox linkage problem or is it something more serious? Does anyone know how to check the linkage - I have drilled out the rivets under the centre console to get access to underneath the gear selector but there doesn't appear to be anything accessible. Any help would be much appreciated.

Justin

I'm guessing if it is a 500 then it most likely is the BW gearbox. This being the case the main part of the linkage assembly is inside the box - there's actually very little outside the box to work on.

If you do want to root around then you'll need to lift out the centre console. to do this you need to undo the nut and bolt behind each of the seats (one each side) slacken off the handbrake and lift it out from the back. There's some insulation material in there and a cover, usually kept on with self tappers. Under that you'll find the workings.

I recall also that the BW box was initially a 4-speed and the fifth was added as an afterthought and it is not unheard of to lose 5th on one of these. Sounds odd you've lost more though.

It's got to be a good candidate for a visit to a specialist.

Just had a look at some better pictures of the Rover box and I don't see any linkage system outside it, like the BW one.

Steve's book reports problems with the Rover box, especially if not kept properly oiled.

Good luck

What year is your Griff? BW box was introduced in 94.

Dusty you forgot the obligatory ish.

There is a linkage mechanism on the rover box but it is part of the box and not a BW add on. To be honest, it does sound interesting and something like a broken selector. When you get the box rebuilt, I would suggest getting it strengthened as the weak point is the output bearings/oil pump. Bernie the Box rebuilds mine on the 520 (www.gearboxman.com???) and he is based in Markyate near Dunstable.

Getting it out is realtively straightforward as the engine can stay in place.

I think it is time to see someone.

Thanks for all the very quick responses! It is a 1993 500 so I believe it is the Rover box (reverse top left). If there is no external linkage then I guess its gearbox out time.

my 1993 chim had the same symptoms. lost 1st 3rd and 5th and it was a long throw back to second too.

gear linkage was a cheap replacement in the scope of things. the most annoying part was the £150 to take it by low loader to the garage (AA refused as it was already at home and my FULL cover apparently only takes it to a garage within 8 miles )

£150 to get it to APM

£100 to fix it IIRC.

bargain.

Thanks - is this linkage internal to the gearbox? If not then does anyone know how to replace it with the gearbox in place?

I had a similar problem with my rover box. Turned out to be a missing plastic cup and ball at the bottom of the gearstick. It fell out when a grub screw came loose in the mechanism. Its a common problem apparently.

It cost me less than £10 to fix and sounds like what you have.

You need to remove the centre console and take the gearstick out first. The pastic cup and ball sit in the ring on top of the 'box where the stick goes.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
