Cooper Sportspack - fan constantly on
Discussion
Hi,
I have a Cooper MPI Sportspack. Recently the fan seems to be coming on more than usual, and once it's on it stays on throughout the rest of the journey, regardless of how short it is. I don't rag the car (never go above 3k revs) so it's not overheating from my driving style.
Any ideas on why it would keep coming on?
Matt.

its the wire link that goes to the brown sensor on the thermostat housing.
its the most common fault with mpi's, the engine rocks back and forth, frays the wire (internally - so you cant see it), this shorts out and makes the fan run all the time, which eventualy burns out, which, once the car does overheat will let the engine boil up!
its a easy fix, you just buy a new wire link and solder it it, its worth replacing the sensor at the same time.

guru 1071, do you know why the MPi mini engine rocks so much? I've fitted an ultimate engine steady to mine, renewed the other steady bushes and when switched off the engine has no discernable rocking when rocked by hand but at low revs, on/off throttle stuff it feels like the thing is trying to fall out the front of the car!
Engine mounts look okay, by the way.

i think its the big heavey wheels that pull it about, they knock hell out the rubber subframe mounts as well, which makes the problem worse.
minispares have just started selling some one piece uprated engine steady bushes (like the oe ones but harder) which help.
you can also buy the two extra stays that go from the box to the frame.
one trick is to open the bonnet, wind the drivers window down and stand near the door and 'wag ' the steering wheel back and forth while you watch the engine. if the engine stays in one place and the body wags left to right the rubber subframe mounts are knckered.

Thanks guys, I'll perhaps have a poke around this weekend before I go on holiday (I'm not mechanically minded at all though so I'll have to get the Haynes manual out)& see if I can see anything that you've all mentioned.
Hopefully it should be cheaper if I buy the parts & then get my local Mini specialist to fit it rather than getting the parts through them.
