I have had this car from new having collected in from John Cooper cars in Brighton.! have it annually serviced by an good independent garage. He needs to contact John Cooper Cars about clearances ( or something??) and the number on the engine technical plate is unobtainable. Tried a web search but looks like they have been bought out by BMW? Does anyone have any contact details?

Also anyone know a fix for a sun visor that wont stay up?

Thanks

coopers are gone, they sold out to bmw

i would guess that if its std rockers the clerance will be 12 thou, if its 1.5:1 alloy roller tips the clearance will be 15 thou

The 'S-Works' cars have 1.5:1 roller rockers, so it's best to set 0.015" rocker clearance cold.
No-one seems to know what cam those cars have. I recently had to do some work on one with 88,000 miles on it because it would not pass the emissions test for its MoT. I rebuilt the engine, boring to 1330 cc, fitted a new standard MPI cam, improved the head and fitted new valves and seals, and increased the comp ratio slightly (well, the over-bore did that). That cured the emissions. One thing I was surprised to see was how poorly the head was done by John Cooper Ltd. The inlet tract was really not exceptional and the exhaust porting had been left untouched. The de-shrouding of the valves was also not as good as it could have been. Once these little things were corrected it went, to quote the owner, better than it had ever gone from new. However, with the 'only average' head, it is hard to see how it could ever have achieved the claimed 90 bhp.

Sorry, I know this is old, but was having a read.as you do.

The cam was standard

The heads weren't done by JCG at all

Clearances were 15 thou

Basically for the 'Si' you got a modified head stage 1, cat back zorst (mild steel), and a plaque, oil cooler, and decals. And claimed 74bhp.

'Si' plus was stage 2 head, and 1.5:1 valve gear = 77bhp

And the 84bhp kit got the K&N element, roller tip rockers, stage 3 head, ecu timing tweak.

The cams are O.E. nothing in the bottom end was touched!

The 'S' Touring, and 'Works' are basically the same engine tweak, wise, but the Works had a 5 speed box.

Every time I've seen the JCW 90BHP kits in Rolling road days they never make much more than 70 BHP - and that's on rolling roads showing standard BMW MINI Cooper S' making 170 bhp!

I didn't want to be the one to say it first, but that is my experience. The cylinder head porting is quite poor and to get a true 90 bhp at the flywheel on any Mini does require a much more radical cam than the standard MPI one. I had believed that the JCW cars had a better cam, but then again, possibly not. All they seem to have is a 'chipped' ignition pack, a slightly improved head with maybe a higher C.R. and a 1.5:1 rocker shaft, together with a modified exhaust system. One might think that 75-ish would be the correct power with these mods alone, remembering that 75 is an increase of around 15% on standard 'Rover-exagerated' figures.
