Mini for under £1000?!?!
Discussion
Trouble is there are too many people putting unrealistic prices on minis at the moment, it's all down to supply and demand I think.
I looked at a few over the last couple of weeks, one priced at £1400 advert sounded promising, I had a look at it, the thing was riddled with serious structural rust, had aknackered, mis-matched interior and a sketchy history, an honest, true valuation would have been closer to £300, but the seller wasn't going to budge on the advertised price. Needless to say I walked away.
The only thing I would suggest is to look at minis over £1000, and go along with cash and haggle down the price, to one that's acceptable to you.

Ithink you're sounding a little pessimistic myself - £1 - 1.5k will easily buy you a passable daily driver.
There are 139 mini's on EBay as I type this ( http://motors.shop.ebay.co.uk/items/Classic-Cars__... ) and yeah there's some crap, some dreamers and a few minter's but there’s also 3-5 promising motors worth looking at.
It all depends on what you mean by "solid"? My Mini for example is structurally sound but in May she looked like this:

A grey wing and faded, peeling blue paint. Now she's tucked up in the garage while I treat all the scabby bits and repaint her white. but that’s all part of the fun?

I'm not bothered what colour each panel is as i will be completely stripping it and- you may hate me for this - putting a 1.6 cooper s engine in the back (if i have enough funds) and using it as a street sleeper. Some say that i'll be ruining a perfectly good Mini and others love the idea.
If your going to strip and play with it anyway, does it really need to be that solid?
Ours was a £113 ebay rot box when we got him, but the new floor pans and sills were easy!
The other advantage to this was that I know about any and all rust - no nasty surprises anymore
The Cooper engine sounds different, to a bike engine anyhoo. (not a big fan of BMW Mini's or the Crysler hair drier in it?)
I always fancied either bike or vtec in the front as a sleeper

If only you put this post up a couple of months ago. I was after a quick sale to get hold of an MX5 and I got rid of my Mini city for £700 and the body was in fantastic shape. Bit of surface rust but floorpans and sills looked like it had just come out of the factory. You would expect it to be made by a totally differrent company to my mini tahiti which continually fights my restoration efforts back with more and more rust.
If you keep a good look out I'm sure youll get someone looking for a quick sale.

I recently bought a 1968 MK2 for £875,totaly original with long MOT and free tax,it's a very solid car with 1 previous owner.I've got to replace the A panels,as the original 40 year old ones are in a bad way now,but luckily the floor pans are solid and the sills have been replaced. The interior is almost like new,as the last owner had seat covers on,and i've replaced the carpets. Not sure whether to keep it or sell,as I dont have much time to spend on it.Would make an excellent works rally replica,as it is tartan red,but on the other hand it would be a shame to spoil an original Morris Mini.

but you might get lucky. £1500 will get you a good (ish) tax and tested mini.
I had the same bother in trying to source a Mk1 golf for around the same price - trying to win a losing battle me thinks!
