Is the breather fitted the correct way round, or is it bent in someway, by all means it shouldnt be fouling the fan. Is fan a standard fan, if so it should remain on the inside of the cowling - do you have a cowling?

Sorry, more info is needed to be more specific. Have you a picture for comparison?

Spacer needed between pump and fan. These are about 5 or 6mm thick....guess you must have lost yours somewhere along the line

Could be he's got the fully round breather rather than the D shaped one?

The spacer is missing. It's a common problem and I had a Mini here the other day on which the owner had fitted the fan the wrong way around to obtain clearance as he had lost the spacer!. No wonder it had been running a bit hot. If the fan is on the wrong way around it pushes approximately 20% less air through the rad.
Mini Spares do the spacer ex-stock. Just call Richy (guru 1071) and he'll put one in the post I'm sure (01423 881800).

I needed two spacers to get the necessary clearance on my 1275 powered van.

Think my engine had 2 spacers but only needed one, so I lost one...

yep.. as above - check fan is the right way round and include spacer, be careful it then doesnt then foul the rad as more expensive to replace.
