First gear crunch

I've just bought a Cooper MPI that needs a few things looked at. One of them is a problem with selecting first gear and getting a crunch. When i depress the clutch, select first, there is a crunch as it goes into gear. With the clutch still depressed, after that it is fine. Go into neutral, lift clutch, depress again and there is the crunch again as you put into first. My work around is select second gear (no crunch) and then first but just wondered if anyone could shed any light on it. I assume its a problem with syncromesh but I'm not that mechanically minded so I'm not sure.

If you can or get some one to look at the set up first. You may be lucky and a bit of ajustment may solve the problem.

is it crash on first gear
if so i always make to go in to second first then move in to first
result no crunch
also engine tick over too high
