hi
wonder if anyone can help me, i have a 1996 rover 1.3 that has been converted to carb and decat'd (not by me). I am having trouble with passing emissions mot. Would i need to put a fuel injection system back in if so which one for most power? would i be better putting an older engine in so as to avoid new emission tests? how do you prove engine age?
any help much appreciated
thanks

I think the year of the vehicle, not the engine age, determines the standards to be met at MoT but I could be wrong.
With SU carbs and no cat, you'll certainly have an emissions issue.
If you replace the cat and then set the tickover to about 1800 rpm then lean the carb(s) off so that it will only just run, you might just squeeze it through if the bores are good and the rocker shaft is standard (i.e. not a 1.5:1 ratio).
After the test you can re-set the carbs, replace the cat and set the tickover back to normal. I have done this and it has worked, but it will still be on the limit. If the MoT station don't like the high tickover, tell them there was a Dep't of Transport document issued a few years ago which allowed this with SU crbs. I don't have its ref number as my MoT guy is a Mini enthusiast and is happy to allow this.
