I have various parts to build up my engine and have a camshalft without any markings, I think its a standard cam that the PO cleaned up... how can I tell what it is ??

with nothing stamped at the oil pump end, i would not like to hazard a guess, some of the rover cams can be identified by the number of bands machined round them at a certain point, i think the 649 was stamped somewhere random! too many question marks to answer! do u have a picture of it?

I have never done this but, if you work out the angle compared to each other of the highst point on the lobs (don't know if that is the right name for them). This should be able to tell if it is standerd or not. You would have to work out there profile to know exactly what cam it is.

DanGT, I'd suggest you'd need a surface plate, a DTI and lots of spare time for that!

if you look between the journels on the cam there should be some raised and hollowd rings they tell you what it is

post a pic of them if you can

Cam grinding is a real hi-tech machining exercise. Then the surface has to be case-hardened properly.
It really is not worth messing about with them. Just decide which cam you need and buy one. The alternative can be an expensive disappointment in the long run.
