Over heating...
Discussion
Just a quick one, guys and girls...
My 1979 Mini 1000 Is getting very VERY hot... the hot weather isn't helping!
I have been driving around with the blowers on but then I overheat, cant put coolant in me!?
I've swapped the thermostat out for a nice new one as that was DOA, Flushed the Rad out and put a nice 50/50 min of Coolant in...
I've also swapped out the Rad Cap as the old one keeps exploding and pissing water everywhere...
Not sure what to do next?? Is there a good way of checking the Water pump is working with out removing the lot??
Any one got any suggestions, you've never let me down before...
Thanks

Flush out the block as well as the Rad?
Sorry, can't think of much else other than a new rad?
Perhaps fit another rad (from the scrappy - small rad/heater matrix etc) facing forwards at the front of the car (IIRC Mini rally cars sometines did this).
Hopefully Cooperman will be along shortly with some tips...

I don't want to sound patronising, but is the fan on the right way around? If it's not, don't be embarrassed, I once saw a BMC works mechanic put one on a car the wrong way - he got a lot of stick! If it is not on correctly you lose about 25% of cooling air going through the rad. Remember, the engine turns clockwise looking at it from the rad end and the blades increase in pitch from the leading edge to the trailing edge to 'throw' the air through the rad.
Now, are you sure it's really getting hot, or is it just the gauge reading 'hot' which may just mean the gauge is reading 'hot'. I had that on my 'S' last year.
A 998 will not normally over heat and if it does then it's something basic like a clapped out rad. It's unusual for the water pump not to pump as normally they fail by gland leakage which you can see. However, the pumps with the pressed steel impellors are not so efficient as the ones with the cast impellors.
Flush it all out and if that doesn't work fit a new rad and thermostat.
I hope this helps.
