I prefer to use one just to make sure it goes in nice and square.

Exactly, while the seal itself is cheap, having to replace the clutch every time because its caked in oil isn't.

Then there's the arduous task of getting it all apart again to fit a new one, then back together again.

You may only use it once, but it'll be cheaper than having to do it all over again if you get it wrong.
