In a bit of a quandry. Four years ago I was a company car driver and I was not allowed to put a towbar on my car, so I needed my "own" towcar. So I bought a Disco, expected it to last a year or two, and ended up doing some basic off road mods and doing a bit of mud plugging. However, I have not used it for ages now as I now run my own everyday car rather than a company one, 3 series estate with a towbar so there really is no need for the Disco. That said, when it snows, the Disco is really handy, but that's pretty rare!

I guess I'm after some idea of value/what to do. It's a 1995 M-plate 300 Tdi 5 door manual. Freestyle alloys, 265 mud terrain copies, 3" suspension lift (or was it 2"...I can't remember!), diff guards, Southdown snorkel, 90 A-bar on the front with Wipac spots, and a front end bash plate. It's had a mild camel cut but the bodywork is generally pretty good, and it had a new boot floor just as I bought it. 165k miles, no MOT but I could probably get it through OK. It's got no ABS or aircon so it's a simple beast.

What's it worth? If it's a few hundred quid I'll probably just hang onto it if gets through a MOT. If I sold it, would I do better selling as is, or converting back to "on road" spec and selling the off road kit separatly? (Guess I'd need a new wing or leave the snorkel in place)

In many ways it's not what it owes me (feck all) it's taxing, insuring and MOTing the thing for the sake of very, very little use. If I had a trailer I'd keep it and just hammer it off road at playdays!

Decisions decisions...help!

Here's the old girl at the front...and I'm genuinely sorry, I really had no idea that Stannage Edge was downhill only (some signs would help!)

I've no idea about the best thing to do with the Disco I'm afraid, but just want to say that looks like it was a fun day out. A nice photo of a couple of great cars.

Hi. I'm in Milton Keynes. I could be interested in it without an MOT as I'd collect it on a trailer. If interested PM me what you'd like for it and maybe we can work a deal out? Cheers Matt.

Matt, cheers but at the moment my post was not meant to be a cunningly disguised advert, but I will let you know if I decide to go that way.

Question...Is it still almost worthless with 12 months MOT?

I might have another option...the O/H's folks might have a use for it, so perhaps if I MOT it, they tax and insure it, they get the use out of it (her mum currently drives a truck cab series 2a so this would be a huge improvement in terms of comfort and ease of driving) but I could still use it on the odd occasion that I need to.

Hmmm....

I guess to answer this would depend how honest I want to be.

In fairness, no MoT and it's only really worth scrap value as there are a lot of Disco's about. But with an MoT it is worth more than worthless. How much is hard to say though without seeing it and how tidy it is or isn't.

Sell. Sold my old J plate 200TDI a year or so ago with one months MOT / Tax. It was a real old dog and needed money spent on it (Welding / brakes / body) but the engine and gearbox was sound it also had the suspension lift and uprated wheels /tyres. I would reckon yours with the off road bits will be worth more than the £550 i got for mine. Stick it on ebay and see what happens.

Thread revival!

Well, the old girl had sat in my driveway since the tax ran out in December...and with a fairly free weekend I thought I'd try and get an MOT.

A quick scrape of a slightly corroded indicator bulb...and she passed!

So we're all taxed, MOT'd and insured, and I had a fun afternoon leaving 20 grand's worth of BMW M-sport in the driveway and chugging round for the afternoon in the best car I've ever owned with a big grin on my face! I actually have some use for the Disco over the winter where it will be employed as a bit of a mobile workshop whilst I sort my boat out over the winter, and who knows, it might snow again!

Gotta say I love that Disco!

Thread revival yet again! The truck just refuses to die and has just aced the MOT yet again.

So now I'm in another quandary. I'm actually seriously thinking of spending some money on it. The reason being that I can't think of another better vehicle, regardless of budget, to do what I want with it. The reasons being...

300 Tdi- fairly economical, fairly simple, can do most things myself
Simple-no aircon, no ABS, no complex Air suspension etc
The best body LR ever made...OK so I'd prefer a 110 but there's just so much more room, comfort, and it has a much bigger back door
Washed, it looks perfectly presentable body wise, but obviously I have no issue using it off road, and it is hopefully going to come in invaluable for a building project we are hopefully going to start soon

So here is my plan. It does bugger all miles per year, a few thousand at most, but when it does get used no other vehicle will do. However it is getting rusty...B and C pillars are not good, inner wings are not much better, although the boot floor was done a few years ago. However I have noticed that you can get repair panels, and the chassis is fine, so I am seriously thinking of spending some cash on it, getting all of the offending areas welded up, and a good clean and waxoyling underneath.

Has anyone got an idea of the costs of having that done? Is it madness, or does it actually make sense? There's no reason why it couldn't last another 15-20 years, and if anything oily goes bang, parts are very easy to come by and cheap.

Thoughts?

The problem with these is that you'll be forever chasing the rust round with your welder. I have a 93 S1 which has sat in my field for five years, it still starts on half a turn of the starter and runs fine but the body is rotten. If you pay someone to weld it then it wont be cheap, I think £500 per side for cills and on mine I had to patch the wheel arches by the rear doors. I'm just wondering ho it passed the MOT if the B/C pillars and arches are going, this is the reason I ditched mine as being an MOT tester I didn't want to be caught by VOSA or police with a dodgy car.
If it's not too bad then I'd get it done as mechanically it'll go on forever, but there comes a point where you will just throw good money after bad.

The only trouble with discoverys, as I have found to my cost, if there is visible rust then there is a hell of a lot more that you won't see until you start cutting out the bits you can see!

But I also know exactly how you can fall for these damn land rovers and pump good sense straight out of the window!

To save making a separate thread, are disco2s in high demand or rather sell quickly? I'm thinking of changing mine for a jeep smile

Anything will sell if you price it correctly, Discos are no different and now is the right time to shift a 4X4
