Thinking about chopping in the VW caravelle for a well specced 110.

I notice they claim a top speed of just over 80, is this correct?

The bus will cruise all day at a ton and whilst 80 might be acceptable, if it's well and truly it's max then it won't want to be cruising at that speed.

Are they still agricultural or have they changed over the years.

Your help is appreciated

They are limited to 88mph. A few companys offer a de-limiter service. But you will void the warrenty. Cab ergonomic are a lot better than previous. But its still a working vehicle at heart. And cant be compared to the VW.

Mate of mine has just returned from Morocco having taken his Defender down there with less than 2000 miles on it upon departure.
The new "softer" interior didn't enjoy the holiday.

I fear it could be the wrong move.......this thing would only ever be used for the long journeys.

The new defender is superb.... far better than the TD5 and an XS version with heated seats & windscreen is great in the winter.
Normal defender driving position ...cramped on the right arm and the left leg gets too heat from the heater !!

Having had a test drive in the back of a new Caravelle the other week ... I think you will not be disappointed with the 110.

It is limited to 84mph [I think due to some standard OEM tyres being speed rated]...I had mine de-limited and re-mapped by Jeremy Fearn and it use to fly along.

You either like or hate defenders ...I did the Taureg Rally [8 day desert race] earlier this year and a guy did it in a standard 110 with a roll cage and had no problems.

In a Defender, everywhere is a long journey.

...and end up back in 1955, which is what they're really guarding against.

If you want a Defender, then you really want a Defender and nothing else will do (often more of a heart than head thing!). Lots of people use them for motorway journeys and love them, and the sense of fun and adventure more than outweighs the lack of elbow room and bouncy ride. However, in my opinion, for lots of motorway use I would definitely look at a Disco instead. You get more or less the same capability, still a sense of adventure, but it's much more comfortable.

They are limited at "82mph" but depending on how new it is can be sorted quite easy, Had a 2010 wich once sorted did 100mph, but you do suffer with mpg, towing I had mine down to under 15mpg.

Sold it as I did not find it any good on long trips, but still love Defenders, got a 2011 X-Tech 90 for playing.

Go drive one and see if you like it on a long trip.

Andy.

Dont think a rusty Disco1 will be in the budget if the OP is looking at NEW 110s...
wink
More a disco3 or similar.

Definitely dont want Disco....Not my style ;-)

Quite fancy a Defender but I think the long runs from Kent to Cornwall would not suit it cos I don't like to hang about

Get one, and whack a Disco transfer box in it.
Defender looks and capability. Discovery final drive ratios.thumbup
Mine thumps along at 85 quite happily.

Mine goes to the Alps every February and have done Marseilles- London in a day. The mpg lets it down at motorway speeds.
