I'm picking up my new D2 in a few days and while it's not urgent it'll need new tyres fairly soon.

So, what to get? I have absolutely no idea about modern 4x4 tyres but want something that'll do it all, but with a definite on-road bias. Anyone got any suggestions?

That's my issue, there's a bewildering choice and last time I ran a 4x4 I just used BFG ATs which aren't really suitable.

I run my Disco 2 on General grabber AT2's. Excellent all round tyre imho.

This for sure.

Nice agreesive pattern and very quiet at motorway speeds. They'll probably show no wear at 50k as well.

Another vote for the Goodyear Wranglers. I got a bit more than 100,000km out of the last set on my Disco.

I've got the AT2 tyres on a Daihatsu Fourtrak - I needed a set urgently for the keuring (Belgian MOT), and they were the only tyres in stock. They look great, but I hate them - they're not good off road, very noisy on-road, and they let go in the wet on roundabouts, which makes for (very) low-speed fun, but pisses the OH off a bit.

I've been running AT2's on my D2 for about 18 months and reckon i've covered around 20k miles, in that time i've been off-road a few times (Pay and play, some of it quite serious), used it in the snow and carried out 2, 1000 mile round trips towing a caravan around the UK, one of which i retuurned home from yesterday.

For me, these tyres are perfect, if you do a search on any of the Land Rover forums you won't get many bad comments (if any)

In term of tyre life, i reckon i'll get 50,000 from them before they become poor off-road, maybe another 15,000 on top of that for road use.

I wouldn't take too much notice of how AT2's work on a Daihatsu. It's not a D2 so pretty irrelevant to your question.

Wranglers are fine but more road biased.

If you look on the D2 Boys Club website there is rarely anything bad written about AT2's and a lot of guys use them.

I wouldn't describe the General AT2 as "very quiet". Yes they're quieter than a full on mud terrain tyre but there's still a noticeable hum at most speeds.

BFG ATs seem to be a moot point as nobody has any stock of them and hasn't for most of this year.

Sadly you are talking about a tyre which has now been replaced by the new General AT. frown

The AT2 was and still is a fantastic tyre which is still available in a few sizes.

It's a shame when EU noise regulations come into play and force the tyre companys to change.furious

Andy.

I hoped you might turn up smile And I have to admit road noise is an issue as we tend to do long trips, so is the AT significantly compromised now? Or do you have any other suggestions?

Are you going to be off roading at all? And are you likely to be hooning it about, throwing it about corners and the like?

This is the thing, I want to use it off-road but that'll likely be limited but I do drive quickly and don't want the tyres to be the limit (IYSWIM).

I presume it has TCS? If so it's amazing how far you can get even on road biased rubber. That said, if you plan on tackling any serious lanes you'll want a suitable tyre. Maybe a cheap 2hnd set of steelies with some proper off road tyres on might be worth considering?

On the road, well a road tyre will always be better. But you won't get a tyre to do everything - jack of all trades and master of none.

That said, the noise from some AT's isn't truly terrible, and it's not as if a Td5 (or any Disco) is a silent waft machine anyhow.

As I posted earlier in this thread, I'm running Goodyear Wranglers on my Disco 2. I run an agricultural contracting business, so I spend a fair bit of time off-road checking fields, attending breakdowns etc. I've never got stuck with the Wranglers (on my second set now).

Regarding my comment about the AT2's - OK it's a Daihatsu, but I'm still using it, so can compare the 2 tyre sorts at the same time. I use the Daihatsu more as a "rough" vehicle. The first time I used it I got stuck in a customers field (where I had been the day before in the LR). The treads on the AT2's just fill up with mud and are too small to spin the mud out - it just stays sticking in there. To be fair I had some excellent Bridgestone Dueler MT's on there before which got through everything, but were absolutely lethal in the wet - they were half-way to a tractor tyre!

All good points, and a spare set of wheels are definite, I struggle with buying entirely road biased tyres for it. It's like putting a farmer in stilettos.

As a compromise tyre my Mum runs some Avon Ice Touring ST tyres. They are quite civilized and quiet on the road, but have just a bit more bite then full road biased tyres should you venture off road. They are ok on road too, although hoonage is likely to tear them up far more than road biased rubber.

SWMBO's car was on Conti (IIRC) winter rubber that really suffered when I drove it when it was warmer, and we're on the south coast so I really don't need the winter capability.

I'm contantly confused by the AT2 being replaced by the AT, not the other way round. I have the new tread pattern, and it is noticeably noisier than the Bridgestone Duallers it replaced.
